Han er kjent for å ha grunnlagt evolusjonsteorien, og har også bidratt til en rekke andre arbeider innenfor systematikk, økologi og paleontologi. I sin bok, Artenes opprinnelse, framla Darwin sin verdensberømte hypotese om at alt liv på jorda er i slekt og har utviklet seg over mange millioner år. Han var flere steder i verden og forsket på forskjeller og likheter mellom arter, hvordan klimaet påvirket dem, og likheter de hadde med fossiler av forhistoriske dyr.
