3. The Aleuts and the Island of the Blue Dolphins civilians went on a fight, killing of dozens of the Island of the Blue Dolphins mens including Karana's dad (Chief Chowig).
4. After the fight, the civilisations of the Island of the Blue Dolphins council chose a new person to replace Chowig's place. The person who was chosen by the council to become the new Chief is called Kimki. Chief Kimki announced that women must do the jobs now since dozens of men were killed in the fight.
5. While women are doing the work, Chief Kimki set out on a sail in order to provide for the island. 4. A group of men were ordered to build a canoe and hide in a cove to watch the Aleuts and Captain Orlov.

5. Karana tries to persuade her father about the decreasing number of otters and that he should take action.

The hunters slaughtered many otters.
