Tyler Bolger is a sophomore at Butler University. He is currently studying Human Movement and Health Sciences, and is possibly thinking about becoming a gym teacher or strength coach. He comes from Chicago, and is a proud alum of Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois. At Maine South, Tyler was a three year starter on varsity for football, was the team captain, all-conference, and academic all-state his senior season. Along with this Tyler is the strongest football player to ever play at Maine South and still holds the weightlifting records at school. He continued playing football at Butler University, but stopped after his freshman season to pursue powerlifting. He is currently the national record holder for the AAPF 220 pound division in bench, squat, deadlift, and total and continues this passion to this day. Tyler comes from an incredible close family which is made up of his mother, Donna, father, Tim, younger sister, Kailey, and younger brother, Timmy. He would do anything for his family, and hopes to work in the Chicagoland area to be near his family when he enters the workforce. This is a little snapshot of who Tyler Bolger is, and hopefully through this padlet, you can learn more about him.

I have been struggling every since I have been at Butler at trying to figure out what I want to do for a career. I feel as if so many people entering college already have a grand plan on what they want to do and what their aspirations are. I feel as if I am behind on this side of things, but through this class I feel as if I have a much better grasp of what I want to do. Through our excursions through the class I have learned that I love to be around children of all ages, and love to interact with them! From high school students all the way to kindergarteners, I love to make connections with people and help them reach their own goals and help them grow as people. One of the things I also learned through these trips though, was that I don't really enjoy the actual teaching of the lesson but rather being with the children and helping them have fun! With my love of working out and my professional experience with working in a gym my whole life, I would love to train children and help them reach their physical goals. That way I would be able to combine my love for working out, with that of making connections with people and helping them reach their goals, and hopefully bettering themselves in the process!

What Tyler's Strengths Are

Through out this class I feel that I have a much better understanding of what I bring to the table. After interacting with different students of all ages I feel that I am very personable with most people. I find it easy to relate and empathize with people even if they come from backgrounds different then my own. I love to make sure that everyone is included in activities, and make sure that everyone's voice is heard. When I was a trainer during the summer with young athletes, one of my specialties was working with younger children with low confidence because I would try to make them realize how great they were actually doing. I loved that aspect of seeing the smiles on the athletes faces when I told them that they were doing a great job, and that they have made so much progress from the time they started! I love making a difference in people's lives and feel like as a strength coach I could do this on a daily basis! Another one of my strength's is that I am very dedicated in everything that I do. Whether that be working on a homework assignment, or working out at the gym, I have been taught by my parents to give my best in everything no matter if I want to do it or not. All in all, I feel that through this class I have a better understanding of what my strengths are which happen to be that I am very personable, I can relate to other's very easily, and I am very determined and dedicated in everything that I do!

I have spent my whole life in the gym, and my professional working experience reflects this. I have had a love of working out from a young age because my father was constantly in the gym, and I had a love for sports. This lead me to going to Flahive's Advanced Strength Training, and working out their daily for four years preparing to be the best football player I could be. Eventually, after my senior year, the owner, Connor Flahive, saw the love I had for working out and my passion for learning everything I could to perform better in the weight room, and this lead to him offering me a job as a trainer there. I spent my time primarily training younger athletes aged 7-17, and loved every minute of it. I loved being able to have high energy at all times of the day with the athletes, and they seemed to feed off of me. So, I knew for the athletes to have the best workout possible I needed to make it the best environment that I could for them. One of my specialties was working with children who had poor self-confidence and my job was to make sure that they felt comfortable and were just having fun during the workouts. I loved that aspect of my job because you could literally see the change, and growth of the children, as they started gaining more and more self confidence. In the future, after I graduate, I would love to open my own gym and continue to train athletes, and continue to influence children's lives!

Jordan taught us that we need to find ways for teachers, and individuals, to connect with their students and one another. Through collaboration of any sort whether that be talking, texting, or some other form of communication we need to let our ideas be heard, and that we are constantly learning from others. I loved the message that Jordan sent us because her word of collaborate is so important in any career that we chose to go into. Any great idea that has ever been invented has come from individuals talking about a problem that needed solving, and then talking out ways to solve the problem. Without collaboration most of these advances would never have been possible!

Lindsay was the first person that I had seen teaching in an environment different from a school setting. Whenever I think of an educator, the first image that comes to my mind is a teacher in a school with students sitting in desks being lectured to. However, Lindsay taught me that an educator can be used in almost any setting, such as her job of being a teacher in Riley's Children Hospital. Along with this, her word of Hope really hit home because I learned just how important being an educator can be. Her job isn't just to teach the children the material, and make sure that they don't fall to far behind in school, but it is to build a relationship with her students, and help them through the rough days. Not only does she teach the students, but she is some of her student's only source of normalcy in an otherwise hectic life.

She is trying to change the world by making it so that more children are able to attend school and get the proper education so that they do not fall into the same path that their parent's have. She is constantly striving to make it so that the children do not simply follow their parent's footsteps because that is all they know, but she wants to give them the opportunity to be whatever they want to be.

Azjah's classroom was probably one of the best experiences that I have had on one of the teacher visits. Not only did I relate to her so much because of the fact that she did not really know what she wanted to do, but also because she had such high energy with her students. She showed me that being a teacher isn't just grading papers, or writing lesson plans, but that it is helping your student's learn in the best way possible for them. I loved her approach of when her students weren't responding well to the bookwork that she switched her teaching style so that they would benefit the most from it. Also, in her classroom I had an incredible experience in which I got to work with her student's and absolutely loved every minute of it. I loved getting to interact with her students, and even though we came from different backgrounds I was able to connect with the students, and break down their barriers so that I could help them the best way I possibly could with their project. It was also when Dr. Hochman and Professor Hartman told me that they saw a teacher inside me, and that opened my mind to possibly being an educator.

It was an incredible experience getting to talk with Angelica because we were able to see how educators teach in other countries. Not only was that an interesting conversation in which I learned quite a bit about her home country and her teaching style, but we also learned about her personal struggles as a teacher. I didn't even think about some of the problems that Angelica faces such as students living so far away from their parents, and not being able to see them for years on end. It really opened my eyes that so many of these educators are friends first and educators second. The fact that she cared so much about these children, and that she wanted nothing but the best for them really hit home for me. One of the reasons that I was not sure if I wanted to be a teacher was because I wanted to make a difference in the world, and did not think that I could do that if I were to be a teacher. However, through Angelica I learned that you could be the biggest influence in a child's life, and every year you have that opportunity with a new class.

Rob Goodwin had one of the most incredible experiences an educator could ever be faced with. He had to go through the struggle of the current Race War going on in America, and tackle it head first. He was thrown into a situation that he was not ready for, a situation he was not prepared for, and he handled it in the most professional and beneficial manner possible for his students. I think the thing that spoke the most about Rob's character was when he told the Vice-Principal that he would stand outside and tell the student's that the school was closed instead of the Vice-Principal because he had a bulletproof vest on. The fact that he would risk his life to save a coworker and to help his students speaks volumes about Rob's character. Another thing that was evident with Rob was how much he cared about his student's and how he felt so emotionally attached to them. The story in which the worst day of his life was when he didn't stop for his student shows just how deeply he cares for his student's well-being. I would love to have relationships in whatever field I go into, that are as meaningful to me as they were to Rob!

This was probably one of my favorite trips that we took because the whole trip we were with students and got to interact with them for a good majority of the time. I loved interacting with the younger children, who I believe were kindergarteners. I got to see firsthand how the teacher's broke the students into groups and tried to have them help one another and work with each other to solve a problem. All of the classrooms that we visited had an untraditional approach to teaching and I loved that type of learning and atmosphere. So often we lecture children, and we don't get to hear their opinions or if they would rather learn in a different way. By combining all different types of learning environments we reach more of the students who may benefit more from different teaching styles. Also, I loved how the classrooms were untraditional because I feel that I could not come into the same exact environment day after day. I would need to change things up for my own sanity, and it would also help the students learn more efficiently!

Ashley's math class was an incredible experience because we again got to see an educator taking a different approach to the classic "teaching environment." I loved the fact that Ashley had her students teach us the material and that she had such a great relationship with her students. She was so proud of all of their efforts, and when we were supposed to write on the white board she was choked up when she saw that we said that they were, "Incredible." She cared so much about her students and that is one thing that I want to have in my professional field. I want to do work that is meaningful to me, and I want to care that much about my clients and want to give them the best effort that I can every single day. I also had a great experience with her students and seemed to really connect with them. We had a great time joking around with one another when they taught me the lesson, and I feel that they actually learned more about the lesson by teaching me. Also, when Ashley started tearing up when her "support" came into the room, it showed just how close the teaching staff actually is.

ArtMix was probably one of my favorite trips because we got to see how a type of education program directly helps out individuals. When we heard some of the artists talking about how the program has helped them, it was hard not to get emotional. The students felt an actual sense of purpose, and took pride in their artwork and in their studio. The "teachers" at ArtMix were also incredibly inspirational because they followed their dreams, and didn't let their age or backgrounds stop them. I loved how one of the women said that she recently went back to college to get her art degree because she was passionate in it. I personally took away from this trip that we must follow our dreams and passions. No matter how old we are, or how many people tell us not to we have to do what we feel is right.

Courtney was an incredible educator, and really took pride in her students and everything they have accomplished. She loved seeing the growth that each one of her students showed, and it was evident with how emotional she was how much she cared for her students. I loved the fact that she was so proud of her boys for being able to teach us the lesson, and how much pride she took in their success. Her room was also a testament to how much she cares for her students because it was dedicated solely to them. The fact that she never shut down a possible idea for her students to learn, as long as they benefited from it was incredible to see. This was seen when she told us how she would sometimes do math upside down because her students really enjoyed this aspect of it. I want to be this dedicated to my students or athletes when I am older because I want to make a genuine difference in my students life, which obviously Courtney has!

Watching someone doing something that they are not only truly passionate about, but have a natural talent for is very rare. Having two of these people in one classroom is unheard of. Yet, in this class we were lucky enough to have just that... two incredible individuals who not only are passionate about their work, but are incredibly gifted at it as well. I have never had a teacher who would make sure that they have a relationship with students in a class, but you guys not only had relationships with certain students, but you had relationships and spoke to every student every single class. It was so easy to talk to both of you because you both had a genuine interest in what each of us had to say, and cared about what we were thinking. You guys have influenced me in more ways than you can imagine, and I hope that in whatever field I go into that I have the same passion for it that you both have for teaching! Thank you again for everything you have done for me!

All in all, I feel that I have grown as an individual during this class. I am still not entirely sure of what I want to do, but I definitely have a better idea of what it possibly could be. I learned that it is alright that I still am not sure what I want to do for the rest of my life, but if I learned anything from the educators in class it would be to follow my passion. I still feel that I need to work on speaking my mind, and being more confident in my decision making, but I will continue to grow in this as well. This class also helped me better understand my strengths and one of those is most definitely working with children, and relating with them. I know that whatever I end up doing in life, that I will do it to the best of my abilities and give it everything I have no matter what. As long as I can influence the world in some way, shape, or form I'll be a happy man!
