- "Drowing is one of our worst fears, (being land creatures, after all), and the drowning of everyone and everything just magnifies that fear." To me when they talk about drowning, I don't take it literal or think that they necessarily mean not able to breath. I think of drowning in life, when things get too complicated and you are burrowed under a pile of complicated mess. Kind of like Ethan, like when he is spending time with Mattie. He starts realizing he hasn't feelings for her and not Zeena, then starts being sneaky to see her like getting up early every morning to shave. It becomes almost like a job to hide it from Zeena but when she starts to catch on, he is already drowning in distress so he gives up and kind of stops caring if she finds out or not, especially toward the ending when they both try to commit suicide together.
