For students who are able to keep up with learning a new language without having support in their original language, they typically learn at an accelerated rate compared to other programs.

Negative Aspects:

*Though it may be a practical approach for students who are able to "swim" and adjust quickly,

students who are not able to jump right into an English classroom and comprehend

without a form of support in their native language, suffer and they are far less likely to have

academic success.

*Students who have parents who are not well-educated are also more likely to become an English learner

*Some students pick up English as a substitute to their first language rather than an addition

*Some students react very poorly and are not able to retain English or their first language.

Swim

Students are left to either teach themselves English, and try to catch up on their own.

Submersion is teaching ELL students all subjects that are normal to every day classrooms, but only keeping them around English speaking students and instructors.

Sink

Goals

To have student quickly pick up English within their first year.

To have student be submerged in an English only Classroom to have student achieve fluency in English.

The problem with this:

No sheltered instruction, ESL instruction, no primary language support are given.

Teachers are not certified or given proper training when ELLs students enter the classroom.

It is a violation of the federal law, yet so many schools have ELLs submerge in English only classrooms.

The only language used in this program is English. Though it will allow students to learn English quickly, they may fall behind in the actual curriculum.
