Fairness isn't everyone getting the same thing, it’s everyone getting what they personally need in order to have equal opportunity. The F.A.T. City video highlights the daily struggles of a student with learning disabilities. Though it came out almost 30 years ago, and these conversations have been in motion for a long time, students are still facing anxiety, tension, and frustration in the classroom. This program helped me look at the world through the eyes of a child with a learning disability. I commend the workshop participants who come from different backgrounds; Some are parents, some educators, and some are psychologists and social workers. Lavoie does his best to capture the experience of being learning disabled. He makes excellent points with depictions of everyday occurrences in the classroom. One of my favorites is how he shows the group absurd it is that we tell children struggling to complete a task that the task is “easy” and we expect this to improve the outcome. Telling someone that something they’re struggling with is easy to you is almost demeaning. Processing time is different for LD children, and a class considered to be normally paced can still feel fast paced for these students. Understanding processing time is important to work successfully with any child.
Then, at the end of the program, he discusses strategies for working more effectively with children who struggle, and illustrates the intense need for support and fairness.
