On a 1-5 scale rate whether your crop, animal, or disease had a good influence or bad influence and post it in the right category.Write a fact to back up your thinking. IE. The crop Sweet potatoes have had a good influence. On a scale of 1-5, I would give them a 5. According to foodreference.com over 2.4 billion pounds are sold yearly in the US. They are packed with calcium, potassium, and vitamins A and C making them a superfood. They have been used throughout history to better mankind for instance George Washington Carver worked extensively with the sweet potato. He developed 118 different products from sweet potatoes, including a mucilage for postal stamps, an economic method for sizing cotton fabrics, dehydrated food and an alternative to corn syrup.

On a scale from one to five I think corn is a five. The six major types of corn are dent corn, flint corn, pod corn, popcorn, flour corn, and sweet corn. Every year the Europeans consume up 700kg a year. That would mean every man, women, and child consumes 1,500 pounds a year or four pounds a day. Corn looks like it would be part of the vegetable family but it is part of the grass family. Another weird fact about corn is a piece of corn will always have the same exact numbers of kernels in the row. The average piece of corn has 800 kernels and 16 rows. In 2012 corn became the biggest producer in the whole world. This might be because corn is not just used in foods it is also used in fireworks, rust preventatives, glue, paint, dyes, laundry detergent, soap, aspirin, antibiotics, paint, shoe polish, ink, cosmetics, the manufacturing of photographic film, and in the production of plastics. In fact corn products can be used in 3,500 ways. That is some cool and interesting facts about corn.

On a scale of 1 to 5 I would give Cacao a 4. Cacao more commonly known as chocolate has a very interesting history including it's name meaning "food of the gods". Some people may think cacao and cocoa are the same but cacao is the bean-like thing that grows off the tree while cocoa is the product made from it.This food played an important role in many ancient south american cultures. The Maya Indians of Central America and the Aztec Indians of Mexico were the first farmers and cultivators of cacao beans. At the earliest time cacao was used to create a ritual beverage that was shared during betrothal and marriage ceremonies. This food was so highly prized

that at times it was used as money! The Aztecs ate the chocolate and drank the chocolate without any sugar. Sweetened forms came about when the Europeans landed in the new world and tasted cacao in it's liquid form, they hated it at first, but then someone discovered that adding honey made it way more delicious. By the 17th century, this form of chocolate was all the rage in Europe, later the Europeans were the ones who added the sugar and milk and made it the chocolate most people know and love. A fun fact about cacao is that the commonly know cocoa beans are actually cacao beans except some English importers in the 18th century misspelled it as cocoa when it was supposed to be cacao, and that is how the name cocoa originated. In December 2016 the United States imported 159.92 million dollars of cacao beans. So that is how the known, loved, and enjoyed chocolate/cacao came to be.

On a scale of 1 to 5 I would give Maize a 5 for these few reasons. Within 20 years of Columbus's last voyage, maize had established itself in North Africa and perhaps in Spain. Maize probably played its greatest role in Columbus's Voyage. Over the centuries, maize became the primary peasant food in much of southern Africa. There are six major types of corn which are dent corn, flint corn, pod corn, popcorn, flour corn, and sweet corn. Since there are lots of types more people get the taste they like! When using corn you can make over 840 different meals with maize. Total world corn production stood at about 34.5 billion bushels in 2011 which is tons of corn. So a rough calculation would show that the world needs well over 34 billion bushels of corn per year to feed its population. One bushel of corn contains about 72,800 kernels and weighs 56 pounds. There are more than 3,500 different uses for corn, and is in all sorts of products from peanut butter to batteries.

On a scale of 1 to 5, I would rate chickenpox 5 (Very bad). Chickenpox is caused by the varicella zoster virus. Chickenpox is highly contagious, the virus will spread from person to person by direct contact, or through the air. Chickenpox has a characteristic itchy rash which forms blisters that dry and become scabs in 4 to 5 days. An infected person may have anywhere from only a few lesions to more than 500 blisters on their body during an attack. Chickenpox can be serious. Before there was a vaccine, each year chickenpox caused about 4 million people to get sick, more than 10,500 hospitalizations, and about 100 to 150 deaths (this may be half is children). Most people who get severe chickenpox are healthy beforehand. Now a days the chicken pox vaccine is a shot that can protect nearly anyone who receives the vaccine from catching chickenpox. The vaccine is made up from alive but weakened virus. It makes your body fight the virus and you are protected against the illness or chickenpox. By having the vaccine 4 million do not get sick and there are 100-150 less deaths per year because of the chickenpox vaccine. Children do not miss school each year because of chickenpox and the population is more healthy.

During the years of 2000-2015 measles vaccination prevented an estimated 20.3 million deaths. For some children measles can lead to pneumonia, Life Long Brain Damage, Deafness, and death. Measles is highly contagious. In 2005, 311,000 children under age 5 died from the disease.

On a scale of 1-5 I would rate citrus fruit a 5. Citrus fruit consists of lemons, limes, grapefruits, and oranges. In the 1800's they used citrus fruit to to help people with scurvy, which is a disease that happens with a lack of Vitamin C. Citrus fruit helped the population from dying. When you think of Florida, you think of oranges. But, oranges actually came from Spain. The Spanish conquered Florida which explains why people think that oranges were originally from Florida. Florida makes a large amount of its money from selling and trading oranges. Citrus fruit has also been used for flavoring foods, juice, and eating. Citrus fruits were originally used for their beauty and color. People used them for decoration. Soon people realized that you could eat them, or squeeze them for juice. All in all, citrus fruit had a good impact on the United States.

Sweet potatoes contain vitamin A and vitamin C they are also a good source of potassium. Sweet potatoes have some nutrients in them called beta-carotene. Beta-Carotene is the substance in fruits and vegetables that makes them colorful, but the human body turns beta-carotene into vitamin A. Sweet potatoes are also known to be the same thing as yams, but actually sweet potatoes contain more nutrients. The sweet potato belongs to the morning glory family. The morning glory family is described as large, starchy and sweet tasting. The skin color of the sweet potato ranges from white to yellow, red to purple, or brown. 260,000,000,000 pounds of sweet potatoes are produced a year. Back then they farmed sweet potatoes, because they are a easy crop. Today we still farm sweet potatoes. And that is all about the sweet potato.

The Cassava is produced in Brazil but Europe is the main exporter of the Cassava. The Cassava is a woody shrub native to South America. It is part of the spurge family. In Spanish the cassava is called the yuca but it differs from the yucca. Cassava is classified as either sweet or bitter. It is mostly grown in the tropical reigon. It is found in the west-center of Brazil. The oldest evidence of the Cassava was 1400 years ago in the maya. You can make the Cassava plant into Cassava bread. The Cassava is only eaten in the tropics. Do not eat raw Cassava, it has cyanide in it and cyinide is very poisonous.

On a scale of 1 to 5 I would say Typhus was a 5 but not in a good way. Typhus had a impact on the New World on a large scale and it had a impact on the Old World too. You get Typhus from not having good hygiene and mostly everybody on the boat had bad Hygiene. You couldn't shower every morning because really if you were a passenger you didn't get to shower. One of the worst things was that it can pass from person to person so almost everybody that came to america had Typhus or some sort of disease. So put two and two together, a contagious disease that can kill you and lot's of people. What do you get, oh yeah a lot of people that are dead or really sick. Also they didn't have a cure for it so really you couldn't stop it and the people who had it didn't know how to prevent it or how to not have it in the first place. Typhus is an infectious disease caused by rickettsia, characterized by a purple rash, headaches, fever, and usually delirium, and historically a cause of high mortality during wars and famines. Typhus now can spread in food and water. There actually is still no commercial available vaccine. Typhus is usually located in crowded not healthy places. Fun Fact Epidemic Typhus has been one of the great disease scourges in human history. Typhus usually has a break out in prisons, ships, war's, and really every where. The reason typhus can be so bad is let's say a person in a factory had typhus the food could get contaminated and every body that ate or ingested that food you could get typhus.
