The clock, being old and dusty, represents the time lost between Gatsby and Daisy. The clock is foreshadowing of Gatsby's dream of Daisy being shattered once he met her. When Gatsby broke the clock it represents his dream shattering. "The clock took this moment to tilt dangerously at the pressure of his head..."It's an old clock," (pg 86-87)

Conversation with Nick

When Gatsby is finally given the opportunity to see Daisy face to face, he becomes hesitant and nervous. Nick picks up on this when asking if he would like to put off the meeting for a few days, while Gatsby continues to find reasons on why she shouldn't venture over there. He states "I want to get the grass cut" and fumbles over his words when describing his desires to Nick (Chapter 5, pg 82). As we have seen Gatsby so far in the book, he has been calm, cool, and collected, so this sudden strike of worry seems very out of character. Since everything is happening so fast in his perspective, as he has been growing his estate for five years to please her, he wants to make sure this event is everything he has fantasized about. He realizes this would not be possible and tried to continue to voice his desires to Nick but he "went unwillingly home" (Chapter 5, pg 83).

Gatsby's Walk Through the House

The chapter opens up with Nick describing how he was "afraid for a moment that (his) house was on fire" (Chapter 5, pg 81), because Gatsby had turned on every light on in the massive house. There was no party, it was simply Gatsby and his employees residing in the mansion. Gatsby claims he was "glancing into some of the rooms" (Chapter 5, pg 81), likely looking back on all of the time he had spent working toward his dream, which was Daisy. The house remained this way even after Nick had went to bed, showing how long he was doing this. Gatsby had created this lavish appearance in order to captivate Daisy and now that he is going to actually see her, his dreams can no longer exist without consequence (since Daisy is a married woman).

When waiting for Daisy to arrive, Gatsby gets extremely anxious and begins to regret going through with the idea of meeting Daisy. "This is a terrible mistake. A terrible, terrible mistake." (p. 87). He realises that it won't go the way he wanted and he starts to question and regret. He knows Daisy isn't the same and he can't face it.
