Kalman Tagiman and Samuel Willenberg were part of enslaved people who would dig up bodies and burn them. Samuel was shot in the leg and continued running. Kalman ran the other way than Samuel. They are believed to be the last two survivors of the most chillingly efficient killing machine of the Nazi Holocaust.

Treblinka opened on July 23, 1942, and consisted of Treblinka I and Treblinka II. both Samuel and Kalman ran from the Nazis. Kalman was born on 24 December 1922 and lived on Twarda Street in the Muranow district of Warsaw. Samuel was born in 1923 and lived in Czestochowa, southern Poland. Because Samuel was a bricklayer, he was assigned to manual labor duties and escaped an early death. His job was to sort through the belongings of the people sent to the gas chambers.
