I believe that students violate commandment number 8, "Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output". Often times, it can be easy for students to copy and paste from another source without giving credit. Many students plagiarize without even realizing it which can lead to negative consequences for them. Whether it be in an essay or in an assignment, students can often take information from an outside source and forget to cite it. It is important that students learn to cite their sources and make sure that they are giving credit to others when it is due.

Q2. Why do you think these violations occur?

I think that these violations can occur for a number of reasons. In cases where people harm others online by hacking their information, I think that greed is a major factor. Often times, hackers will try to get bank account information or identity information which can be sold for a lot of money. Many times people engage in these activities to make more money and be financially comfortable, however they do not think about the harm and consequences it has on the person they are harming. Similarly, in cases of cyberbullying or online hate, I believe that people engage in these violations in order to bring others down and boost their own self-esteem. Bullies often bring others down because they do not have a high self-regard and this can be applied to online bullying as well. In cases of stealing other people's information or data, I think that greed, selfishness, and jealousy can contribute to engaging in this violation. It can be tempting to take the credit for an idea if you know that it is good and will lead to success. However, it is also important to realize that stealing other's information is unethical and a violation of their intellectual property. Overall, I believe that these violations occur because people can forget to think about the consequences of their actions and may try to push themselves forward by holding someone else back. It is important to realize and address this problem so that other people are not harmed by one's actions.

I think that to reduce this type of behavior there needs to be more education and awareness about computer ethics. This can be done by educating students early on about the dangers of violating these commandments and how actions can affect other people. By consistently providing this education to students, we can try to reduce behaviors that harm others and violate these rules. Furthermore, I think that working to require computer ethics training in companies can also help to reduce this behavior. Awareness and education are two big steps that will inform people about these rules and how to properly utilize technology.
