The readings were loaded with resiliency skills we can all use to help create more space to be resilient, reflective, and kind to ourselves. What skills resonated the most with you? And how can you start to use these skills to strengthen your resiliency reserves?

So many parts of the readings and video resonated with me, but my 2 major take aways were:
Video - I need to reflect more on what I am doing and ask myself "Is what I am doing HELPING or HARMING me? This can be applied to checking the news, the time spent in negative self talk, exercising, cooking choices, e.t.c. It doesn't shield me from negative, anxious or stressful situations but I am better able to reflect and control my behaviours for a more positive result.
Are teachers ok? No, and toxic positivity isn't helping - this really hit home with me. I have the issue with always feeling like I "should" be doing everything that is suggested/offered. I need to say no sometimes, leave school at normal times, not take vacations with my work. I need to prioritize me for a while - and that is OK! :)
Through all of the readings I have come away with different ideas for myself and my department. For me, I need to build up my resilience tool kit and my positivity/resiliency battery. I can do more good in my job and personal life when I am in a good place. I need to focus on building myself up so that I can best support others later for longer. For my department, I want to identify the strengths of our team and tap into those so that we can support each other and help each other grow.

1. Progress NOT perfection. I really struggle with this! Implementing a hybrid system I couldn't let go of my own expectations, despite exhaustion and burnout.
2. Sort through the weeds of what actually works. I loved the top three resilient practices and feel I can implement the third one more... "Is what I am doing helping or hindering".
3. Choose your own attitude. Love this!

The thing that really hit home for me is the idea of slowing down in order to consider your reactions. I feel like I'm always running from one issue to another, go go go and definitely am struggling with decision fatigue. As such, when something new comes up my first response is "argghhh". Slowing down will help all those little things piling together not seem so overwhelming.

I have learnt that it is ok not to be ok. It is ok not to have everything under control and it is ok not to be perfect. I found online school very stressful, I wanted to have everything under control like in school and it was almost impossible. This lead to very long working hours, being exhausted and not being as motivated as I would usually be to teach. Again, it would've been a great moment to ask myself: Are my actions helping me or harming me? I was probably harming myself at the time trying to make everything perfect.

I have learnt that resilience is something you can develop in yourself and it isn't something you either have or have not. I liked the quote about how your attitude to adversity is the one thing no one can take away from you. The Ted Talk was very powerful, showing how someone going through such a traumatic time could choose to be resilient rather than be overwhelmed by grief. My take away from this reading is the idea that positive intentions can make a huge difference to resilience!

I really enjoyed these sources, and many things stood out to me. The idea of “decision fatigue” has really hit home and it is something I think I’ve been experiencing. It has also made me realise that in another, personal crisis, I face last year, I experienced this profoundly. Just recognising this is the first step to being more resilience, and accepting that it will be more challenging and that it is ok. Re-instilling routines and rituals into my week will be fundamental in this, and I would like to restart doing this.

The idea of bearing witness to trauma also resonated with me and it is something I have not been truly aware of. The idea that we need to face the situation we are in, now, moment by moment, and sit with our fear, anxiety, etc, is really powerful. It is something I would like to continue trying to cultivate with my students: without dwelling, taking time to just be and to listen to ourselves and one another. With this however, also facilitating a lightness and moments of joy and humour.

The idea that being resilient is equivalent of moving from victim, to survivor to thriver. This is something I know I need to bring into my own personal practice, but also something I would like to work more on with my students. E.g what have you achieved, progressed, accomplished as a result of this crisis?

One idea that sticks with me is this idea of giving others tools so they can empower themselves- that it is not our job to save others, but rather remind them how they can help themselves. I am learning this myself by spending more time alone, and knowing that having hard moments are part of human existence, as was mentioned in the TEDtalk.I also felt encouraged by the comment that resilient people are intentional about focusing on what they can change- I do this now, and this is a reminder to strengthen this and keep going with it.

The importance of connection - and the need for this to be prioritised - stands out. It often seems easier for this to be sidelined in favour of more 'urgent' things. The power of narratives, as highlighted in the Ted Talk, is something I value and it was affirming to realise that reframing our stresses in these times as narratives seems a promising strategy. I find journalling and similar strategies quite stress inducing and negative, but a more conscious focus on narrative might bring a more positive bent. This usually comes with distance, but, perhaps, it can be consciously brought to the fore much earlier?

I realize why I just keep going. I am uber resilient. BUT I have not focussed enough on my own needs I tend to look outward. In this way I never get to the root of things bothering me. It is then no surprise that I find myself stuck in the rut I worked so hard to get out of. I will write 3 good things each night before I go to bed in my phone- so I can look back on all the good in my own life. I will ask myself to focus on the good I can find int eh world each morning to help myself remember to feel the happiness the world brings my way each day.
