The Party, created by Huey Percy Newton and Bobby Seale, also organized hijackings. The most notable is the one organized in 1972 by Melvin and Jeane McNair on a Delta Airlines flight: they demanded a ransom of one million dollars before heading for Algiers, where other militants went into exile. They then headed for France, where they were sentenced to a few years in prison before living the rest of their lives there. 19 members of the movement, including two women, are still imprisoned today in the United States, more than 40 years after their conviction.
