this quote is from much earlier in the book but i still think it shows much significance. the quote is coming from a duel or assessment that "mama", the teacher, has chosen Zelie to fight and prove herself. she starts to fight Yemi (who has already proven herself and is a lot like a teachers pet, nobody has beaten her.) Zelie has cause Yemi off guard and although she didn't hit her, her staff catches her knees and trips her. Yemi yells "mama- " and Zelie cuts her off saying, " must she fight your battles for you? come on Yem, if your going to lose, do it with pride.

There are three speakers (Narrators).

Zelie- She is perceived as an outcast because she is the daughter of the maji and she is a dinaver. her dad and brother pay extra taxes for her and if she doesn't get them in she will have to start to pay them off by being a slave until the debt is payed and nobody ever does because the taxes are raised every time. (iv explained her character in the other post.)

Amari- she is much more wealthy (actually the daughter of the queen and king) and she has maji as servants but she often feels bad for them and because of this and many other things her mother does not care for her much. the most recent thing that is notable she did is she gave a maji one of the royal artifacts as currency to get more food for their family and may have gotten them in trouble for trying to sell it.

a quote she said that was special to me is she said "for binta" (she was very connected to one of her maid/servants) and had become friends with her. she was on her way to face her father to try and convince him to let her go.

Inan- amari's brother. i haven heard from this character yep but i am going to in one of the next chapters.

i see the seeds if a warrior-Zelie chapter 33
Amari, makes her first kill in battle but she is terrified. Zelie is usually on Amari about being to quiet and timid and when she sees how Amari fights, she sees to her surprise, a warrior and Zelie tells her (Amari is the audience) i picked this quote because i thought the working was so unique and i thought that it was a very important time in the book where Zelie finally sees what Amari can do.

I was surprised to hear when Amari decided to go into battle alone without her brother because she feared losing him, that she told him she would rather lose herself then lose her brother. "i cant do this again, i need to do this alone."

Much like your Sula reference you can also use the two main characters in the story to compare and contrast. Charlotte (who is much like in the place of Eva) is helping Jaime learn and she is guiding him. she may be able to chose what she is teaching him and telling him about the case, but in the end it is his choice if he will listen to her and or go ahead and take things into his own hands and create his own destiny.

Impact quote(#2/2)

“The two of us, we're the best kind of disaster. Apples and oranges. Well, more like apples and machetes.”

i chose this quote because it is a story about two people (one who knew the other before they met and one who didn't know the other) and they become best friends. i thought the quote really showed each of the characters personalities while using a smart play on words. this quote impacted my writing because i think i would want to be able to write quotes like this in the future, adding in more play on words and trying to go further into development with characters when i create them. (which i thought the author did a great job with in this quote)
