         <description><![CDATA[<div>Elephants are classified as&nbsp; Proboscidea. They are under the category Proboscidea&nbsp; because of their main feature and that would be their trunk. Henry F. Osborn studied some 352 Proboscidea species, which half were elephants. Now about the evolution of elephants. Elephants have been around for 55 million years and they have been to every continent on Earth. But, why were their two kinds that survived and the rest became extinct? The answer to that is, they most likely didn't evolve from their dramatic climate and environmental change.&nbsp; By their quality and features, their body can survive in extreme environment change. This might not be the only reason why but it is a good generalization of what happened to elephants over time. The root of the family Elephantidae is from the mammoth, Asian and African elephant. The Asian elephant is more closely related to the mammoth than the African elephant. 50-60 million years ago, proboscidea&nbsp; evolved from an mammal, the size of a pig today. The earliest know Proboscidea was a&nbsp; Moeritheres. It was a size of a pig and it lived in Africa between 50-60 millions years ago. The mammoth, African and Asia elephants were all from africa but the aftrica elephant was the only one who stayed and evolved.
