Hearing about Gertrude Belle Elion's upbringing within the first paragraph did tug on my heart. I can't imagine losing your closest family members to health conditions. Elion did extensive work for medicine for drug treatment. We can compare her work to her mother and grandfather passing away from different types of cancer, and she was developed treatment for two cancer treatments. The treatments are groundbreaking that I am sure many lives have been saved because of her dedicated. What bothered me was her dean telling her she must complete her PhD full time to leave the program. She left the program because she knew her career was more important at the time. It was interesting to learn of her effectiveness to develop a antivirus. I could understand her science from a personal experience as well. I got vaccinated for chickenpox and when I contracted it my body had already built an immunity that resulted in me having very few pox.

Something that surprised me was reading about Franklin's story and how her work was stolen from right under her nose. It is even more upsetting to discover the people who were behind this scheme. Watson and Crick were both great scientists making big progress in the study of the DNA structure. They come across as greedy and selfish in this anecdote because they did not remain true to their profession. I believe a real scientist would have retested a new hypothesis to correct his error, but not go as far as to steal the work of another fellow scientist in the field. This is the first that I have read of an account like this so it took me aback. I need more clarification on the details of Yalow’s discovery. I understand the general concept but need more information about the process and the definition of certain terms used to describe it as well.

Elion had a rough upbringing which really wowed me based on her background and how much she persevered through life. Her work had to be inspired by her families past experiences with cancer. I can only imagine losing your loved ones to cancer and then developing cancer treatments. For Elion being able to stand up to the program and choose her career over her PhD is a huge power moment. Franklins story was really upsetting because of her work being stolen. It's sad that people would steal somebody's work like this and then take credit for it. I'm so happy our world has changed from this and credit is given where credit is due, for the most part. Women already faced enough in this work field, many of them didn't even care if they were recognized but I can't imagine Franklins anger when her work was just stolen.
