Escapism- Rebecca Sugar

The song Escapism represents Julia's feelings about the government, they are in and how they are trapped. Julia feels hatred for the party, but more importantly, she wants to leave. The way she feels is represented in the song because the song is all about wanting to leave "this awful place" which is a lyric in the song that shows that both the singer and Julia want to leave where they are. in the song there is also a lyric that shows this feeling. that part where she sings "but pulled against the grain I feel a little pain" it represents how Julia feels the pain being in there conforming to their standards of not feeling love because it goes against the party's will which is discussed in the line pulled against the grain. she feels as if she was being dragged to be like everyone and until she went her own way and followed her own path she was happy. she learned to love someone and when they did fall in love she was happy where she will do anything except lose Winston in part 2 chapter book they discuss how far they would go for the brother even going as far as to throw acid on a child's face before they would lose themselves as said in part 2 chapter 8 "you are prepared to, the two of you to separate and never see one another again? No! Broke in Julia" this quote backs up my claim about how she would listen to this song because even when they are together they would rather be free because being with someone is different than being with someone when you are not allowed to. this is why I believe that Julia would have this on her playlist it represents her wanting freedom with Winston.

This song is how Julia's action was played through the movie because This song is about how he should be in control yet he won't take charge so she takes control of the relationship, this is evident in book 2 chapters 1 when Julia talks to Winston saying "No. Don't come up to me until you see me among a lot of people. And don't look at me. Just keep somewhere near me." this shows how she took initiative by making sure what the plan was she told him everything he needed to do so the could be with each other. Julia even goes with Winston to meet with O'Brien to confess their love and join the brotherhood which was against the party which shows her devotion to the relationship. the song also has a lyric that represents Julia's love for Winston, the line is "I've forgotten young love joy" which can be perceived as young love because it had just started so he experiencing love in that way was new to her. there is also a line "feel like a lady are you, my lover boy" which is supposed to represent her sexual desire when Winston is reading Goldstein's book and Julia is trying to get him to join her in bed, but has to busy reading the book that she starts to get annoyed because he has less of a desire for the relationship. For these reasons are why I believe that Julia would have this on her playlist because of how it relates to the actions she has done and her controlling and leadership personality

I believe that Julia would have this song on her playlist because of how upbeat and jumpy this song is which is rebellious to the party in a sense that the party hates anything that's not in the parties favor. I also believe that she idolizes Amy Winehouse because of how rebellious she was and how she revolutionized music. I also feel like another reason she would This song represents Julia in the inside rather than what she pin the middle of the book because she's head over heels in love with Winston and the song talks about how they haven't seen each other in a hot minute which really symbolizes how Julia and Winston had a plan to finally meet together without seeing each other long enough for it to be suspicious. There is also another lyric In the song, that talks about finding the right person "I hope you find the right man who'll fix it for you" And the man that Julia has found would be Winston who has helped her find what she wanted which was a rebellious relationship with the person she loved because the only reason she wants to have sexual relations with someone is to be rebellious towards the party. There is also a moment in the book where she has to agree to what she will do anything to stop the Brotherhood and O'Brien says " You are prepared to lose your identity and live the rest of your life as a waiter or a dock-worker?" this quote stated by O'Brien asks them to lose their identity for the party and both Julia and Winston agree to do this and in the song there is a lyric "did you have to change your hair" this lyric questions the reasoning on changing a prominent feature that made up Julia. For those reasons are why I think that Julia would have this song on her playlist because it mirrors her outward image to people.
