During the imperialism period of Africa there were countries far and wide that focused on carving out their own piece of the vast African Pie. Among those countries the main few were Italy, Spain, France, Britain, Portugal, and Belgium. All those countries were major European powers at the time. They were driven to compete for power and due to all the wars from the past they held some national pride to make their nation the most powerful. As we look at this map we see that most of Northern Africa is conquered by France and a lot of Southern Africa and North East Africa were conquered by the British. The most striking remnants of imperialism in Africa is in South Africa where the language spoken there is called Afrikaans which is a mix of English, Dutch, and South African Berber. White and Black neighbourhoods remain separated due to the racist beliefs that were brought over from Europe, and even with so much change the White people of South Africa live a largely better life than the Black people. Some more remnants of imperialism in Africa is Algeria still speaks French as well as Tunisia and parts of Libya. The same pattern is shown with Angola because the national language of Angola is Portuguese. Also another pattern is shown because in Morocco Spanish is widely spoken around the northern parts and the southern parts due to interactions with and deals with the Spanish. As you can see these conquering missions to imperialize Africa have a lasting effect to this day. Even with the Berlin Conference in 1884 there was so much competition to get a piece of the African Pie. There were 7 countries that made claims all throughout the continent that they should have larger pieces of Africa. Sometimes claims overlapped each other so agreements needed to be settled, but overall this piece of evidence shows that there was intense competition between nations to make them the most powerful of them all.
