Mao Zedong had three main revolutionary goals. These goals were to have a better life for the poor, modernize China economy, and restore China's position as a major power in the world. A big problem was China's big population. The government had to take away some of the land from the richer people to give to the poor, because what is being poor if there isn't a basis of what "rich" is.

Mao Zedong thought it would be a great idea to take a "Great Leap Forward." This great leap forward was Mao wanting to achieve the modernization of China. He did this by making communes which is where thousands of acres of land is divided up and about 20,000 people work the land. All good things must come to an end, the people working could slouch off and still get paid so food production fell.

Mao Zedong was concerned about China's youth experiencing factions, rival groups, and capitalism within China. Capitalism is a free market economy meaning the government doesn't control anything to do with production. Some effects of this was schools closing and factories disputing. The red guard were Mao Zedong's supporters who made rallies and tortured those who didn't like him.

Mao Zedong died and Deng Xiaoping rose to power. He also wanted to modernize things like agriculture, to expand industries, develop science and technology, and upgrade China's defense forces. Mao had a heavy industry with mining and weapons. Deng ran a light industry that manufactured consumer goods. The only difference is Mao wanted an industry that didn't serve the citizens of China.
