Toledo's Jews were initially treated decently since Alfonso required their assistance in managing the city. Many people were unaware of how illnesses operated as the fatal pandemic known as the Black Death swept over Europe. Some Christians erroneously accused Jews of poisoning wells to kill them rather than blaming natural causes. Many innocent persons were killed as irate mobs attacked Jewish communities in Toledo and other towns. This was just one more instance of how Jews were unjustly held responsible for the issues facing society.

Ferret Martinez leads riots that kills thousands of jews in seville - 1391

On June 4, 1391, violent riots broke out in Seville as a result of a priest named Ferrand Martínez inciting Christians to attack Jews. Numerous survivors were compelled to convert to Christianity or escape after thousands of Jews were killed. One of the deadliest anti-Semitic incidents in Spanish history, this attack signaled the start of even more severe anti-Semitic treatment, which ultimately resulted in the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492.
