Christian kingdoms attempted to retake land from Muslims who had dominated Spain for centuries during the protracted Reconquista. Living under both Muslim and Christian control made this period difficult for Jews. Although some Jewish settlements prospered under Muslim rule, Christian triumphs frequently resulted in stricter regulations and coerced conversions. Jewish people experienced a rise in discrimination as Christian monarchs consolidated their control.

An important turning point in the Reconquista occurred in 1085 when Toledo was overrun by the Christian King Alfonso VI from Muslim control. Toledo's Jews were initially treated decently since Alfonso required their assistance in managing the city. However, Jews were under increasing pressure to convert to Christianity as a result of Christian domination. Jewish life in Spain became more unpredictable and challenging as a result of this shift.

A Jewish scholar named Rabbi Nachmanides and a Christian convert named Pablo Christiani engaged in a public dispute known as the Barcelona Disputation. The question of whether Jesus was the real Messiah was up for debate. Despite Nachmanides' strong defense of Judaism, his subsequent punishment demonstrated the lack of religious freedom enjoyed by Jews. Because it sparked more attempts to convert them, this incident made life more difficult for Jews in Christian Spain.

A horrible charge known as "blood libel" held that Jews had abducted and murdered Christian infants for religious purposes. As a result of these lies many Jewish communities were attacked by mobs. Jewish officials attempted to disprove these lies, but they persisted, escalating dislike and posing a threat to Jews residing in Christian countries.

Many people were unaware of how illnesses operated as the fatal pandemic known as the Black Death swept over Europe. Some Christians erroneously accused Jews of poisoning wells to kill them rather than blaming natural causes. Many innocent persons were killed as irate mobs attacked Jewish communities in Toledo and other towns. This was just one more instance of how Jews were unjustly held responsible for the issues facing society.

On June 4, 1391, violent riots broke out in Seville as a result of a priest named Ferrand Martínez inciting Christians to attack Jews. Numerous survivors were compelled to convert to Christianity or escape after thousands of Jews were killed. One of the deadliest anti-Semitic incidents in Spanish history, this attack signaled the start of even more severe anti-Semitic treatment, which ultimately resulted in the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492.

Jewish intellectuals were obliged to defend their opinions against Christian leaders during the Disputation of Tortosa in 1412. The purpose of the argument was to coerce Jews into becoming Christians, which made it unfair. Since rejecting Christian reasoning could result in punishment, many Jews felt powerless. Jewish communities faced severe new restrictions following the dispute, which made life even more challenging and increased the number of forced conversions.
