More then 3.5 million slaves were now free. In November 1863, he explained the principles of the Declaration of Independence and how all people should should think about the sacrifices of the Civil War. He wanted "a birth of new freedom". Following them, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Lousiana, and Texas also seceded. They disagreed with everything that President Lincoln was doing so they wanted to do their own thing, and have slaves. T. Beauregard's confederate army went to Fort Sumter, the war began. The Union army and the Confederate army fought for four years. Many bloody battles happened and the nation was split apart. The United States won the war with hopes to bring everyone back together. He was attending a play at Ford's Theatre. John Wilkes Booth came in and shot Lincoln and he died.
