On January 1st, 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which set all of the slaves free. More then 3.5 million slaves were now free. All of the slave states in the south were renamed as free states. I think it was a sucess becaus eit set many people free and very slowly helped bring people together.

The Gettysburg Address was a speech make by President Abraham Lincoln on the battlefield of the Gettysburg Battle. In November 1863, he explained the principles of the Declaration of Independence and how all people should should think about the sacrifices of the Civil War. He wanted "a birth of new freedom". This was inspiring to many people and I believe the speech was a success making people realize what they needed to do.

After Abraham Lincon was elected as president, South Carolina seceded from the Union. Following them, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Lousiana, and Texas also seceded. They disagreed with everything that President Lincoln was doing so they wanted to do their own thing, and have slaves. It was a failure because they all eventually came back into the union.

When General Pierre G. T. Beauregard's confederate army went to Fort Sumter, the war began. The Union army and the Confederate army fought for four years. Many bloody battles happened and the nation was split apart. The United States won the war with hopes to bring everyone back together. I think that the war worked with bringing the country together because eventually all the states were together.

On April 14th, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was assasinated. He was attending a play at Ford's Theatre. John Wilkes Booth came in and shot Lincoln and he died. I think this was not a sucess as the United States got stuck with Andrew Johnson as a president.
