Rigor Mortis is when the muscles contract or stiffen due to lack of oxygen in the bloodstream that leads to a build up of calcium. The affects of Rigor Mortis begins usually 2 hours after death in normal conditions. Stiffness starts in the head with the smallest muscles like the eyelids, neck, and jaw. As time passes stiffness gradually moves down the body towards larger muscles. In warmer temperatures Rigor Mortis will occur more quickly, and in cooler temperatures it will occur more slowly. Body weight and activity before death will also affect how long Rigor Mortis will take or if it even occurs at all.

Livor Mortis is when blood seeps through the tissues and settles in the lowest parts of the body depending on the position at death. The red blood cells break down and the hemoglobin that spills out turns purple, which is visible in parts of the skin where the blood pools. Lividity is first present at about 2 hours after death (AD). Between 2 and 8 hours lividity will be present, but if the skin is pressed the color will disappear. Temperature may impact how long Livor Mortis takes to set in.
