Hello, I’m Rania. I teach French as a second language in primary school. In Greece there is an alarming increase in the number of refugees and migrants arriving from all over the world. According to data provided by the Institute for the Greek Diaspora Education and Intercultural Studies 9,5% of the total school population fell in the categories foreign or co-ethnics and returnees. I would like to learn more about the newly arrived migrants' situation in order to be more able to face the challenges.

People have moved from their home countries for centuries, for all sorts of reason. Firstly, they try to escape conflict, violence, poverty and seek superior healthcare. Secondly, they try to find refuge after being displaced due to environmental factors like natural disasters, erosion, and other environmental factors caused by climate change. In some cases, people migrate with the knowledge or hope that more opportunities will be available to them in their particular field than at home. Many people also study abroad to seek out better educational opportunities than are available in their own countries. Parents sometimes make the difficult decision to migrate so their children can benefit from things like superior education and plentiful job opportunities.

In Greece, migrants are particularly touched by the financial crisis and many of those who used to work in the informal sector, including in agriculture, have lost their jobs. The presence of a large number of migrants in the streets of Athens, many unemployed and some homeless, has led to some social and political tension. There are also many irregular migrants who are detained up to several months in various establishments, such as police stations, border guard stations and coast guard facilities, which are clearly not suitable for long-term detention. In some of the detention facilities, the migrants have limited access to toilets; some facilities have no artificial lighting so that during the winter, migrants are in the dark from early afternoon. Most of the detention facilities visited lack heating and hot water and the detainees complain about insufficient amounts and poor quality of food, lack of soap and other hygiene products, as well as insufficient clothing, shoes and blankets.

One of the issues for discussion is how to ensure that migration is orderly, safe, regular and responsible as the number of migrant deaths around the world continues to rise significantly. Many people make dangerous migration journeys overland before they reach the Mediterranean. Crossing the Sahara Desert in order to reach departure points to Italy and moving through the Middle East to reach Greece are the prevalent migration routes to Europe. The primary dangers for those migrating are harsh natural environments, lack of food and shelter, and violence inflicted by smugglers and national authorities.

Greece remains a gateway into the European Union for thousands of refugees and migrants, a fact that creates pressure at the borders, especially Greece’s borders with Turkey. The asylum system in Greece was, for years, characterized by chronic deficiencies, such as limited access to the asylum-procedure and registration of asylum applications, the lack of procedural safeguards, shortcomings in interpretation services, poor quality of asylum interviews. This situation, in addition to violating international obligations of the country, resulted in refugees being unable or not willing to seek asylum in Greece. Access of asylum seekers to legal employment, particularly to work permits, has become extremely difficult, and close to impossible. The overall negative atmosphere towards foreigners does not distinguish between refugees and economic migrants, persons present legally or illegally in Greece, those who have live in Greece for years or new arrivals. Xenophobic reactions and behaviors, as well as violent incidents with racist motives, have regularly also affected asylum seekers and refugees. Xenophobia and racism have a negative impact to the enjoyment of rights, from access to asylum to social rights, including access to health care, education and employment, and have seriously affected possibilities for integration.
