THE idea of a merger initially only involved Malaya and Singapore in 1959 and not the Borneo territories, says former Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

However, he said, first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman rejected the idea for two reasons – the growing communist influence in Southeast Asia which was also infiltrating Singapore through its ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) led by Lee Kuan Yew. “Tunku was concerned that if merged, the communist influence spreading in Singapore would spill over to Malaya,” Razaleigh said in his memoirs launched recently.

The similar is that in source B and C they both did not want to merge together. For source B and C, they both dislike the idea of merger. Source B explains how the merger only involved Malaya and Singapore, Tunku was worried that if a merge were to happen, Singapore communist would influence the people of Malaya. Where for source C, it explains how the Barisan Sosialis showed that they were worried about discrimination. As for Malaya, they were afraid of the imbalance between the Chinese and Malay population.
