●A conductive hearing loss indicates that there is a problem with the mechanism that conducts sound from the environment to the inner ear. Problems in the external auditory canal (outer ear), ear drum or the bones of hearing (the middle ear) may cause a conductive loss. This type of loss can often be corrected by medication or surgery. If it cannot be corrected, the individual can usually do very well with a hearing aid.

●A sensorineural hearing loss indicates a problem in the organ of hearing or the nerve of hearing. There may be damage to the cochlea (inner ear), auditory nerve, or the auditory centers of the brain. An individual with a sensorineural hearing loss may benefit from a hearing aid, cochlear implant, communication therapies, other medical management depending on the degree of the loss or the cause of the loss.

Reminder: Some strategies that may work for all students.

Look directly at the student and face him or her when communicating or teaching.

Say the student’s name or signal their attention in some way before speaking.

Assign the student a desk near the front of the classroom, or where you plan to deliver most of your lectures.

Speak naturally and clearly. Remember speaking louder won't help.

Do not exaggerate your lip movements, but slowing down a little may help some students.

Use facial expressions, gestures and body language to help convey your message, but don't overdo it.

Some communication may be difficult for the hard of hearing student to understand. Explicitly teach idioms and explain jokes and sarcasm.

Young hearing impaired children often lag in the development of social graces. Consider teaching specific social skills such as joining in to games or conversation, maintaining conversations, and staying on topic.

Male teachers should keep moustaches well groomed.

Parenting Lisa is no different than parenting any other child. A parent's job is to love their child unconditionally, regardless of disabilities. Lisa's disability with hearing loss does not define the individual that she is. She is a lovely little girl with the biggest heart. I would do everything in my power for her to feel content and happy with her life.

Every so often, Lisa and I visit the doctors office to make sure everything is up to par. After our primary care doctor is done with checkups, they send us to a hearing loss specialist. We work with an Audiologist. These doctors are trained and practice medicine in order to be able to perform in-depth behavioral hearing examinations. These tests are painless and non-invasive. After exam, the audiologist will spend time talking with you about your child's hearing ability and recommend an appropriate treatment plan or medical intervention.

Every parent needs to be stable enough to raise and care for their child. Additional expenses can add up when dealing with a disability like hearing loss in order to treat it. For example, hearing aids, which is a device that helps children with hearing loss hear clearly again can cost up to $1,500-$3,500 per unit. Cochlear Implants are surgically implanted devices that directly stimulate the auditory nerve in the inner ear with electrical stimulation. They are much more expensive and can rack up to $100,000 in medical bills. Speech-language therapy after getting hearing aids or a cochlear implant to help him or her catch up on speech delays typically costs$200-$250 for an initial assessment, then about $100 to almost $250 per hour. Assistive listening devices like FM systems are discreet and work well in a classroom situation in conjunction with the child's hearing aid or cochlear implant can cost around $713.
