Jesus was a Jew. The Jews were waiting for a Messiah however they interpreted it as describing a great warrior who would lead them into battle against their oppressors. Initially the other Jews who followed Jesus were called Naserians. Most of the Jews however saw him as a blasphemer and a heretic. Saul went round with the squad stoning followers of Jesus. On the Road to Damascus it is said that he was blinded stuff and he became a Christian and changed his name to Paul after a few days. The teachings of Jesus were for all, "Gentile or Jew". The followers of Jesus were a mixed bunch so they had to form their own religion. Christians were disliked by the Jews and the Romans because they refused to worship the Emperor as a God so were seen as a threat. They were persecuted, fed to the lions, stoned and crucified. It was not until the time of Constantine that the Roman state became more tolerant of Christians as he converted to Christianity on his deathbed in 337 CE.

-Reason 1: The authority of the Pope over all of the smaller churches had gone too far as Catholics believed that the Pope is the direct successor of Peter whom Jesus chose to lead the Church. 'You are Peter, upon this rock I build my church... I give you the gates to the Kingdom of Heaven' (Matt 16:19)

-Reason 2: There was an argument as to the place of the holy spirit within the faith. At the Council of Nicaea it was agreed that the Holy Spirit proceeded from the Father and by the 9th century the Catholic Church had changed it to 'and the son' or filioque in Latin.

-They then both proceeded to excommunicate each other, essentially solidifying the split. It was Cardinal Humbert of France who excommunicated Patriach Michael of Constantinople.

-The Protestant Reformation was started by German priest and intellectual Martin Luther when he nailed his 95 theses to the Castle Church in Wittenberg in 1517

-The reasons for drawing up his 95 theses was as follows: The Church sold tickets or Indulgences which suggested that you could buy your way into Heaven, sermons were in Latin therefore ordinary people couldn't read it nor interpret it or themselves, religious posts were often bought, fake religious artefacts were sold to peasants.

-He emphasised that you didn't need priests and the Churches interpretation of the texts and you just needed the bible and your own faith.

-Henry is initially named by Pope Leo X as the defender of the faith and insults Luther repeatedly. He wanted a son and as Catherine of Aragon wasn't give him one therefore he wished for the Pope to declare his marriage invalid. With the help of Thomas Crammer Henry created a breach with Rome and was declared supreme head of the church. He married Anne Boleyn and took control of the Churches wealth and power. He ordered for the bible to be translated into English but didn't want much to change however on his death others wanted to bring the Protestant Reformation to England. Because the new King Edward VI was only nine the Protestants got their way, no confession, no devotion to saints, no prayers for souls, no vows for Priests not to marry and a new prayer book in English. When he died, Henry's daughter was loyal to the Pope and aw it as her duty to reverse the changes and killed over 300 protestant men who refused to renounce their faith including Thomas Crammer.

-The society of Jesus or more commonly known as the Jesuits, aws formed in 1534 by Ignatious Loyola who was a Spanish noblemen and priest.

-Aimed to restore the Pope to power and valued the Pope over national ties. "soldiers of Christ" and "for the greater glory of God"

-Dispatched to all 4 of the known continents to spread the word by showing the lord's love and affection through charitable works.

-Council of Trent where the teachings of the Protestant reformation was vigorously rejected.

-Protestants emphasise faith alone whilst the Jesuits emphasised good deeds. The Church emphasised the need for bishops and Popes and interpreters of the scripture (of course) whilst the Protestants said scripture alone is important.

-Both parties thought they were the real Church. The Spanish inquisit... um I mean the Jesuits were considered a success because they stemmed the spread of Protestantism and all of the aspects of the Church-The Pope, the sacraments, transubstantiation, confessions and indulgences all remained-remained the same however it can be considered a failure also as it didn't destroy Protestantism like it had set out to do.

-'that all of them may be one father, just as you and I are one' (John 17:20)

Ecumenism is the belief that all of the churches should be united as Jesus would've wanted and it emphasises the similarities between the denominations rather than the differences.

-Examples of ecumenism in practice are the Taize community which was founded by Brother Rodger in 1940, in 1910 there was the world missionary conference so they weren't competing for converts and in 1948 the world council of churches was formed which aimed to provide financial support for refugees, support civil rights, solve moral and spiritual problems, send aid to countries and to unite Christendom. However, the RC church didn't join which made up 61% of the worlds Christian population.

-Reasons against Ecumenism: Many
martyrs died defending their faith/denomination so forgetting our differences could be seen as disrespectful to them, some differences are too important to gloss over such as protestants aren't going to suddenly believe in Transubstantiation and it could encourage a diluted version of Christianity which is too vague.
