On February 10, the Treaty of Paris put an end to the French colonial empire in North America and consolidated England as the hegemonic power. In opposition it only had to Spain, that controlled New Orleans, the most important city, with about 10 000 inhabitants. Regarding France, the territorial loss was not felt as catastrophic. Fisheries rights were maintained in Newfoundland and the French-speaking Catholic population would receive respectful treatment.
