2 main skills needed to effectively communicate are; Learning to listen and being sympathetic. The textbook sates, "Use the techniques
of clarification and reflection to confirm what the other
person has said and avoid any confusion," (2). It is important to listen in order that we avoid confusion and potentially hurt someone's feelings. On being sympathetic, the book said, "To do this you need to be aware of what is going on in other people’s lives," (3). Taking an interest in others shows we care. By just doing these 2 things, we can improve our mental health and improve our state of mind.

I personally experienced this when helping out someone who was having a hard time dealing with their friends. She had gotten involved with the wrong people and they were not treating her right. I made sure I kept eye contact and listened carefully to what she said so that I could help her the best I could. I gave her an example of a time when something similar happened to me. The textbook said, "If appropriate, offer your
personal viewpoint clearly and honestly to avoid confusion," (3). It made me feel better knowing that I helped out a friend.
