Something that I have found useful has been to gain insight from people outside of the classroom. A great idea is to bring in guest speakers from different fields of work to help speak on how their culture has benefitted them in their line of work.

Another great way is to use art to help designate with different culture. There is so much diversity in art that this is a great way to reach students across different subjects whether it is in English or history.

Culturally responsive teaching methods

Something that has helped me in this has been group work. This has been a great way to integrate cultures into the classroom. This allows for students to put their brains together and to embarked who they are by getting to know one another.

Another way is to set policy’s in the classroom that allow for safe conversations to be had. For something that I have learned is by having every student sign a waiver stating that they are not allowed to judge and there is consequences to this action.

Another way to adapt teaching styles is to be flexible with lessons this means incorporating creativity into every lesson is very important when preparing lesson plans

Fostering multicultural classrooms

Something that really can help with creating a safe environment is by setting the standard for class discussions day 1. This prepares the students and lets them know that throughput the semester we will be diving into difficult topics that can be triggering to some.

A great Way to set up the classroom is by getting a flag from multiple different countries of every student that is in the class. This is a great way to show them that their heritage matters and is being respected.

Another way to set this up, is by having posters all over the board with people from different countries, all having in their own language. This shows acceptance and also can create a simple bridge between language barriers.

Involving family’s and community

A great way to involve the community surrounding cultural inclusion is by having a multicultural bake sale. This is an event that allows every student to bake a dish from their own culture and present it at a sale where parents with their students can come through and buy different snacks from different countries.

Another great way is by having a cultural festival that allows for student students to bring their families and experience their different culture. This would look like a black party that could be held at the school as an event to incorporate an inclusion amongst the community.
