Personal Connection- Angela M

A personal connection I can relate to from Coraline life journey is building a relationship with my parents. Coraline was always fighting with her parents as not liking her home life. When she goes into this new world with her new parents she loves them and gets along so well with both of them. Once she realized that they are possessed and evil she realizes that she regrets what type of relationship she has created with her real parents and wishes to go back. Once she gets back to the real world she tells her parents everything and creates a better bond with both of them. I can relate this to my real life from sophomore year and now. I used to not have the best relationship with my parents like how Coraline started the story but once life went on she realized they had a big impact on her life. Creating a better relationship with her parents like I've done with my whole family these past 2 years have made me a better person. The personal connection I am making is the connection between the child and the adults in her story and in my life.

The similarities between Alice and Coraline are both young females as the main characters. They both feel like an outsider in their community trying to find a new world. They both go through a tunnel to the new world they have discovered. Both Alice and Coraline become new types of people in their new discovered world. They are both said to play a game by the Antagonist and get stuck in a difficult situation. In both stories the fantasy world becomes a scary place which helps the girls realize the appreciation for their normal life.

Alice is a well mannered and very curious young girl who fell down the rabbit hole by following the white rabbit. While discovering the "Wonderland" Alice becomes a whole new person. She seems to be bored with her life which makes her go searching for this adventure.

Coraline is a young girl who moves into the new house, her dad lets her go explore the place and thats when she finds the little door.

The setting in Alice in wonderland and Coraline is very similar. Both stories take place in 2 settings. Both Characters go into a different world. Alice follows the white rabbit down his hole and Coraline finds a little door and follows the tunnel in the middle of the night. The setting from both these stories include a mystical garden in the new world. The gardens from both stories are very similar because they are very unique with different shapes of animals as plants and vibrant colors throughout.

The differences from these two films is Coraline's original world is very dull and dark and once she enters the new world with her second family its very bright from her vibrant garden to her family's new outgoing attitude. From Alice in wonderland the story starts out normal and once she goes down the hole everything seems to become dull and dark. The setting and colors from the new world show the watchers that everything isn't always better on the other side and to appreciate what you have.

In Caroline, she sees a mouse running into the crack of the tunnel which draws her into the other world. It intensifies her curiosity so she begins to go into the tunnel on her own accord. Eventually, Caroline gets stuck in the other world and has to complete a mission of finding the children's eyes and her parents in order to escape.

In Alice in Wonderland, Alice gets drawn into the tunnel by a rabbit. As she tries to find the rabbit that entered the tunnel, she accidentally falls into hole and into the other world. Alice is ultimately trapped in the other world and goes on a journey to find her way out.

In both movies, Alice and Caroline were drawn into the other world by animals. Caroline was drawn into the other world on purpose since the Other Mother had sent the mouse to intensify Caroline's curiosity for the secret tunnel. As for Alice, she accidentally entered the other world as she was trying to follow the rabbit. Both of them entered and exited through the same tunnel that they had entered through.

In Caroline's original world, everything is dull and bland with a color scheme of gray, white, and black. The use of limited colors is to create a boring and dull environment in the original world. But, when Caroline goes through the passageway and into the other world, it's full of bright colors that initiates happiness and fun.

As for Alice in Wonderland, in Alice's original world, everyone was wearing neutral colors to indicate a boring society that tries to fit in with each other. But, once she fell into the rabbit hole and into Wonderland, the color scheme now consisted of dark colors to create a suspenseful and scary setting that greatly differs from the original "safe" and "happy" setting in the original world.

A personal connection that I could relate to Caroline is that toward the end of the movie, we can see that she has many supportive friends who shared her love for gardening. Overall, they went out of their way to spend time with her. I believe that making friends who love to share your best interests is the best type of friend since they value your time and attention. Throughout my high school years, I have gone through many friendships that have taught me many valuable lessons. I learned about having trust, loyalty, and comfortability in all of my friendships. Caroline's parents neglected her interests at the beginning of the movie so it made her feel like she was being pushed away. I left friend groups that made me feel insecure since they would put aside my feelings. But, at the end of the movie, Caroline's parents put in the time and effort to garden with her. I appreciate those who make time to hang out with me and those who don't judge me on my interests. During my senior year, I truly understand what it means to have trustworthy friends who are attentive and reliable.
