-American Indians had inhabited the New Jersey area since sometime before 6000 B. C. So when the Englishmen arrived they initially formed a strained relationship with the Lenni Lenape Tribe. This short-lived partnership allowed for successful trades incorporating fur, food, and agreements towards land. However, things drastically changed in 1643 when the Dutch forced the Lenape onto barren and desolate reservations. In an effort to fight back, the Lenape tribe began a war with the Dutch, lasting from 1643-1645. As a result of this war the Dutch colonists raided the villages killing women and children.
