In 1830, Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act. This allowed America to seize Native American land and relocate those Native Americans westward. The terms of this relocation were supposed to be fair, but the President and others ignored them. They forced Native Americans to move West. The Native Americans experienced disease and famine during the move, and they were frequently robbed by White Settlers. This is why it was called the "Trail of Tears".
