Stage 6.1 Family members

This week's challenge is to learn to say, recognise and write characters for family members. Below is a list of strategies to use. Have a go at a few of these to see which ones you find most effective in supporting you to embed the characters in your memory, especially for recognition.

You will notice that all of the female family members begin with the female radical on the left. So you know immediately which characters are the females. The male members of the family have some similarities. Dad (爸爸) and grandad (爷爷) share the father radical at the top.

1) Use Jinbu 1 textbook page 20 to see the nuclear family vocab. Look at the word, cover, look again. Please add 爷爷 (yé ye) =grandfather and 奶奶 (nǎi nai) = grandmother.

2) If you are a list learner, Jinbu 1 textbook page 34, the Family section.

3) If you have time and are a hands-on learner, make a set of flashcards. Write the character on one side, pinyin & English on the reverse. Use these to go through regularly until you know them. Look at the character, see if you can remember the English, flip it over to check.

4) If your time is limited and you prefer learning on a screen, use this quizlet set:

5) Create pictures associated with the characters to remind you of which one represents which family member. Eg. 弟弟 = little brother; he has horns, and loves slides.

6) Practise writing on a whiteboard, over and over again, until you have the characters embedded in your memory.

Practise saying the family members after the pronunciation is modelled for you.

3) Page 20 of the JinBu 1 textbook: read about how measure words are used in Chinese. The most common measure word and the one used to count people is 个（ge). As soon as you use a number in Chinese (like 'a' or 'one') you must add a measure word between the number and the noun. eg 一个弟弟 = a / one little brother.

4) Page 21 of the JinBu 1 textbook: reading exercise 4. Read and translate the information about Jamar and Derry's families.

8.1 measure words for pets

Finish going through the ppt Chapter 4b attached to the resources section of Padlet. Review the pets characters and pinyin we practised online last week.
Remember we learned two measure words last week: 个 (ge) is the generic measure word and used for counting people; 口（kou) is for counting mouths to feed in a family. There are a few measure words for animals, but we are going to focus on just two of these for the animals learned so far. 只 (zhi) is used to count small to medium-sized animals, such as cats, dogs, rabbits, pigs, sheep, mice etc. 条(tiao) is used to count long (and wriggly) animals, such as fish and snakes. So, when you count animals, use the pattern number + 只 or 条 + animal. Eg: 三只猫: 3 cats, 五条蛇： 5 snakes.
There are some example sentences in Chapter 4b ppt for you to practise putting these new measure words and pets in sentences. Have a go!

Test yourself on writing these from memory.
Spend 3 minutes practising writing the 3 measure words you have learned so far: 个 (people)，只 (small to medium-sized pets)，条 (long wiggly pets).
Spend 2 minutes practising writing 有 (have) and 没有(don't have).
Practise writing family members and me / I in characters.
Write the following sentences in characters, remembering to use the pattern: number + measure word + noun. Remember 'and' when joining nouns is 和 (he). Take a picture of your work and upload it to the Homework section of padlet.

Practise writing 小 (small) and 大 (big) 10 times each.

Introduction of 8 hobbies, asking 'What is your hobby?' and answering 'My hobby is...', saying you like or dislike a certain hobby. We looked at splitting up the verb (first character) and object, and then played around with the verbs with different objects. We also pulled the compound characters apart, character by character. This is the best way to understand each character as an individual entity / word which can be used with a range of characters, rather than just the ones you have come across in today's hobbies introduction.

Make flashcards for the 6 sports in the ppt and in JinBu 1 textbook p40. Characters on one side, pinyin and English on the other side.
Spend 10 minutes practising recognising the sports characters and
pinyin.
If you have access to the Jinbu 1 audio files, listen to p40 exercise 3. If not, do this as a reading exercise. Daw and fill in the table with details from the statements. The names of each person are in characters in the text after the character 叫 (to be called). In the table they appear in pinyin, so no need to panic! **The verb we learned last week 会 (can) appears in all sentences before the activity verb.

Sentence structure: I + day + verb + object

Note that in Chinese, there is no need to translate 'on' in front of days.

Jinbu 1 p60 Review vocabulary in blue box at the top of the page. We learned these words during the online session on 27th March.
Practise writing each character 5 times to embed them in your memory.
Read the yellow grammar bubble about how to make nationalities in Chinese. Really easy! Add 人 = person to the country and you have the nationality! Make a note of this.
Read the dialogue in p60 ex2 and answer Qs 1-5.
Write / type the grid under texts on p61 ex4. Read the 3 texts and fill in details in the grid in English.
p61 ex6 Write out the text by substituting the English words for characters. Upload to the homework section of Padlet.

We did some dictation for writing practice on subjects. Have a go at writing characters for the following pinyin. Not quite the same as hearing it, but better than no practice.

Verbs: yǒu ， méi yǒu , xǐ huān

Day: xīng qī

Lessons: kè ， zhōng wén ， fǎ wén ， yīng wén ， dì lǐ ， lì shǐ ， shù xué ， kē xué

Sentences:

wǒ xīng qī yī yǒu zhōng wén kè ， méi yǒu yīng wén kè.
tā xīng qī sì yǒu dì lǐ kè hé shù xué kè.
mèi mèi xǐ huān lì shǐ.

Speaking practice: Ask what time you go to school / leave school / eat lunch and dinner.

Q: 你几点 + verb? (nǐ jī diǎn + shàng xué / fàng xué / chī wǔ fàn / chī wán fàn)?

A: 我 + time + verb. (eg wǒ qī diǎn bàn shàng xué ， sān diǎn yī kè fàng xué)

Welcome back after the Easter break!

Jinbu1 p65 ex3. Work out the meanings and pinyin readings of the questions in the Email from Niu Tian （牛天）.
Practise saying the questions out loud。
Write answers in pinyin for each question.

We will use these questions to practise speaking in Mandarin during Thursday's online session.

20.2 Radicals focus by Monday Tuesday 6th May

We've already come across radicals for woman (in 妈妈，姐姐，奶奶，妹妹) ，child (in 好，学生），speech (in 课，说）mouth (in 吗，和），hand (in 打), beast (in 猫，狗), sun (in 星）amongst others. I'm sure you can spot the radicals quickly.

Jinbu 1 textbook p65 ex2 introduces 8 radicals, some familiar, others will be new. Copy the list of radicals with their meanings from the yellow box.
Have a go at identifying these radicals in the characters in a-x. Remember radicals can appear to the left, right, above or below the rest of the character (called the component), not always in the same place. You don't have to write these down. I want you to train your eyes to pick out the radicals quickly. This is essential if you want to look up meanings of characters in a dictionary.

20.2 Reading practice by Tues 6th May

Copy the text in characters, so that you get used to and build up confidence in character writing.

Use the introductory ppt Food and Drink in the Resources folder on padlet, used in last week's online lesson, to make a set of flashcards. Alternatively, you can find this vocabulary in Jinbu1 textbook p72.
Spend 15 - 20 minutes reviewing and learning the vocabulary: a) character recognition, b) pinyin recognition and saying the words out loud, c) writing the characters out to embed these in your memory.
Please add coffee 咖啡(kā fēi) and cola 可乐 (kě lè), to eat 吃 (chī), to drink 喝 (hē) and to want 想 (xiǎng) to your list / flashcards.
Translate the sentences into English.
1. 我喜欢喝茶和咖啡。
2. 妈妈不喜欢喝果汁。
3. 爷很喜欢吃比萨饼和鸡蛋。

22.2 Word order practice by Mon 19th May

As part of the End of Year Assessment, you will be focussing on writing sentences in the correct word order. You will be given sentences of characters in the wrong order and asked to rearrange them to write sentences in Chinese word order.

Attached is a practice worksheet for you to have a go at. The English is included and I have added a few hints about Chinese word order to support you.

*If you are pushed for time, you could just move the characters around on the worksheet.

It would be better, if you have time, to practise writing the characters, as this is what you will need to do on the Assessment.

Spend 10 mins reviewing Food and drink vocabulary either using your flashcards or the ppt in the Resources folder. How many characters could you recognise immediately? How many need a bit more time? If you need 5 more mins to really embed them in your memory, then take an extra 5 mins.
Practise writing eat - 吃 and drink - 喝 5 times each.
Writing 4 full sentences using a range of food & drink vocabulary.
1. State two foods or drink you like eating / drinking, joining the nouns with 和 (and).
2. State two foods or drinks you don't like eating / drinking.
3. State a food you WANT to eat. (想)
4. State a drink you do NOT WANT to drink. (不想)

24.1 Fun with radicals & consolidation for the assessments by Tuesday 10th June.

A big part of learning to recognise Chinese characters is looking at the radicals for clues.

Jinbu 1 textbook p82 ex1 and ex2 focus on the radicals used for food and drink (not exclusively). Obviously you won't be able to discuss these in a group, but you may find it interesting to read ex1 and then see the application of radicals in the characters in ex2. Have a go! You don't have to write these down. I find it fascinating learning radicals.
Consolidation ahead of the assessments on June 10th: Jinbu 1 textbook p85 ex 3; read the questions first and then find the ley information from information in the table. This is a good way to consolidate a lot of vocabulary from a range of topics.
Jinbu 1 textbook p85 ex 4. Read the diary and answer the questions.
Turn to the vocabulary pages after each chapter in Jinbu 1. Chapter 1 p18, Chapter 2 p34, Chapter 3 p52, Chapter 4 p70, Chapter 5 p88.
Cover the English. Test yourself on recognising the characters. Say the English meaning aloud. Make a note of the vocabulary you couldn't recognise immediately, so you can review it again later.
Cover the characters and English. Read the pinyin aloud, then say the English. Again, make a note of the less familiar sounds and review them again later.
Go back to Coursework 22.2 Word order practice posted on 19th May. Have another go at completing this exercise. The writing section of the assessment focusses on word order just like this. Post it on Padlet or send it to me, if you want me to check the answers.
