It can be easy to lose empathy as schedules become full and we don't know the full story of those around us. We easily can look at situations through a lens of our needs and not look at the full picture.

Leaders should be like retail always three months ahead. This may be an over simplification however the premise is sound. The best leaders plan ahead with contingencies for plans that may go off track. I once had an administrator that would purchase a dozen cases of water for field day because he assumed there would be a large portion students with not enough water.

I once had an administrator that created plans and projects in a vacuum and while they did listen to input and would seek it out, it made no impact on their plan. If you don't listen to your staff you are not meeting their needs. In turn they can't meet the needs of the students.

By having the opportunity to work with individual and understanding how frustrating this is I will always remember this feeling and will never marginalize my staff and colleagues in such a way.

When leaders phrase every request with "it is for the children" seems to be a disingenuous. As professionals we all know why we come to work and some times we do need to be reminded. However often when this phrase is used it is a manipulation tactic to fall in line with the will of the leader.

Falling into this management method could happen easily. By surrounding yourself with people that feel comfortable voicing their opinions and comfortable challenging the leadership appropriately.

Many leaders turn into bullies simply to get their way and wave their power and influence in the face of all their staff. Generally this happens, in my experience, when a leader is insecure in their own abilities.

The best way to avoid this pitfall is to keep a check on your own mental health. Often people and children that bully others are getting bullied themselves. This can happen at all levels not just with children.
