During the battle of the Somme the British had a plan to fire so many bombs at the Germans causing them to be bombarded. Unfortunately, this plan backfired when most of the shells did not explode and the plan backfired. The British were so confident they marched out in broad daylight and only with rifles not aware their plan failed. They were no match for the German machine guns causing them to be defeated .

For the first time in World War One, America's four Canadian allied troops joined together and attacked Germany in Vimy on Easter Sunday, April 9th, at 5:30 A.M. . They called themselves the Canadian Corps.

"The Canadian Corps also outnumbered the defenders by 35,000 to 10,000, and, with flank support, deployed 1,130 guns. "

"Canadian casualties amounted to around 10,500, whereas the German defenders lost almost all their strength, including 4,000 prisoners. The capture of Vimy Ridge pointed to the future, where similar careful set-piece attacks in 1917 and 1918 established the Canadian Corps as a premier fighting force."

Germans built dry, safe, and comfortable trenches. With bunkers that had electricity, and sometimes running water.
The British and French were always convinced that they were not going to stay long, and did not spend as much effort on their own trenches. Their trenches were muddy, full of water, and not safe. It was hard to get any sleep, get a decent hot meal, keep your clothes dry, or keep your sanity. Disease ran rapid, there were many health problems that took more men out then out than fire. Soldiers developed an attitude in a trench that everybody is going to die.
