"Three Words"

The students will agree to a random topic. After the topic is picked, students will take turns contributing three words to the story (regardless of if it makes sense!). The object is to go quickly, not to make a good story.

I love this one because it gets students out of their element, gets them used to interacting with one another and is very lighthearted.

Augmented Reality Apps

After doing some research I chose to download 3 different AR phone apps. Below I will provide my thoughts of each:

1. Augment -
This application is created
to allow users to see their
products in a 3D
environment in order to
work on improving
engagement and driving
sales. My favorite thing
about it, and what I would
probably use it most for
would be redesigning my
house. The app allows you to
choose an object and place it
anywhere in the room where
you are. So if I wanted to see
how a chair would look in a
certain space, I could place
it there and have a 3D view
of what the room would look
like. Super cool!
2. Google App
I have always been a google
user, however I have never
downloaded the app onto
my phone until I began
researching AR applications.
I have been missing out. The
fact that you can scan your
camera around a room and it
will generate a list of
products or searches based
on what it sees is mind
blowing. For example, I just
scanned around my
classroom, as it was
analyzing my room it found
a link to buy the exact desks
that are in my room. I will
for sure be using this app
often.
3. Pokémon Go
This is one that some
people are very familiar
with, but personally I had
never downloaded the app
to play around with until
now. The idea that the game
is imbedded into real life is
incredible. This opens up so
many opportunities to
create educational games
based on the same idea. It is
engaging and students
would love to use that kind
of technology to learn
instead of using their typical
websites and workbooks.
Definitely a kind of
technology I will keep my
eyes on for the future!

Coming from a Title 1 school, a fully immersive technology (headset, screen, speakers) is far from being implemented into our school system. However, there are ways we could implement it now that could still be beneficial.

All of our schools in the district are now 1-to-1 with devices. Because of this, making use of the various VR YouTube channels can be done in our classrooms now. I was actually unaware of all of these resources until I began reading about it for this class.

I can see this being useful for classes such as Art, History and Science especially during a pandemic when field trips are not available. Providing students with a means to explore various historical sights, and museums is a way to get students engaged way more than a textbook or movie.

Thoughts on BCI..

Brain Computer Interface is an interesting topic especially when considering the effects it could have in the classroom.

BCI could be an incredible resource for students with disabilities such as Autism, as a lot of times these students are unable to communicate their thoughts or feelings. Having BCI would improve our teaching of these students because we would know better where their knowledge is currently as well as be able to assess their improvement based on our teaching (so our teaching would improve as well).

I'm really not sure how I feel about the average student using BCI. I think it would be very hard to keep teenage students on task if their thoughts are controlling their actions. Even now, it's a struggle to keep students focused when I am able to look at their computer screens and control what they are looking at/working on. How do you control this with BCI? I'm sure there will be a development for this in the future, however right now that is my concern with using this in the classroom.

Coding and Robotics in the Classroom

I have already seen first-hand the use of both coding and robotics in the classroom. Many schools I have worked at offer a robotics club, where students develop their own robot and take it to competitions. I have also subbed in a few schools that teach their students how to code through their STEM or STEAM programs. However, this is only the beginning.

As far as robots go, I have never seen a robot used as a teacher, only for teaching purposes. I think the use as a teacher could be an incredible benefit in the future, essentially working as a teacher aid in the classroom. Students would be able to work in a small group with the robot as the teacher worked with the rest of the classroom or the robot would be able to keep track of student records so that the teacher could focus better on creating lessons and teaching the extent of each day. While I think knowledge wise a robot could be able to run a classroom, I don't think that this will happen (at least in the near future) for the sole fact that no one can understand and empathize with humans as much as a human can.

Coding is something that I believe every school should be teaching their students as our world becomes increasingly more technological as each day passes. There are programs for all grade levels that teach coding to students. Personally, in one of the articles given to us there was a program called Tynker Games that provides curriculum for teachers if they are combining coding with a specific subject. I will be looking into this to possibly implement it into my math support classes next year. I think all of my students would be very interested in this and it would serve as a great supplement in my classroom.
