David Rivers is an army ranger, and a student at West Point who really loves BASE jumping (parachuting from fixed objects). He’s engaged to his fiancee Sarah and plans to marry her in 6 months when he graduates, but a little before he graduates, he is discharged from the military due to a health concern, and finds out his wife cheated on him with his best friend. His friend asks him to go to Philadelphia with him on break and stay at his house, and now that there's nobody to return home to, he decides to go. At the house he meets his friends' sister Laila, and they begin to date, but that ends quickly due to David's suicidal tendencies and her ex Peter being a jerk.
David blames Peter for this sudden turn of events and plans to kill Peter, and them himself. He succeeds in killing Peter, but is kidnapped by some guys because they were also planning on killing Peter. Because of David's background and special set of skills, they offer him a deal: his life for a favor of killing a target of theirs. Since David is an adrenaline junkie he accepts. They go to a remote base location to train David for his mission, and reveal their identities as Boss, Matz, and Ophie.
David's mission to kill the target somewhat succeeds and he stays with the team to do more missions. Along the way they meet a few more people. Ian, the genius planner, and Karma their getaway driver who is also Matz's sister. David, Boss, Matz, Ophie, and the rest train together and do more missions over a couple months until they are given a final assignment to kill five of the biggest bosses within their jurisdiction at a meeting. Since they know that this is their last mission they plan on living together in a gated community away from criminal life, after completion of the task. The mission goes okay up until the end, with a couple of unplanned events along the way. Just when the team is ready to drive away they get ambushed by a large force of armed guys. The only two who survive are Ian and David.
David and Ian make it to the gated community but now plan on getting revenge for what happened. They set up a team to do it, but the team fails, so David asks Ian to get the details on what it would take to get revenge himself.

David - David Rivers is an ex army ranger who was discharged from the military for medical reasons. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan and lives for adrenaline rushes. He loves to BASE jump which is an extremely dangerous hobby (BASE jumping is parachuting from fixed objects) but this is why he was recruited to the assassin team in the first place. David suffers from extreme depression because of his wife cheating on him and his ex girlfriend leaving him, and he often thinks about suicide.
Matz - Matz is a tightly wound military veteran with a foul mouth. He much like David loves adrenaline rushes and lives for combat. This is why he joined Boss and his team after military service. He picks on David a lot and everyone generally considers him to just be a jerk. This may be true to his personality on the outside, but on the inside he really cares about the team and their futures.
Boss - Boss is an old guy who also served in the military. He isn't like the others though. He's very calm and doesn't necessarily live for fighting. Since he's been in the killing business for a long time he's a seasoned professional, and also knows the ins and outs of almost every operation. He's seen a lot over the years and has acquired a lot of wisdom.

There are multiple settings in this book that greatly impact the story. The first setting that really matters is at West Point when David gets discharged from the military and finds out that his wife cheated on him. This is the reason David went to Philly and the main plot happened. The second important setting would be the base of operations where David lives with the team. Here they go over missions and create a bond which becomes a very important thing towards the end of the book. The last setting that has great impact on the story is the rendezvous point where the team was supposed to get away on the last mission. They're ambushed here and only David and Ian survive. This leads David on a revenge tour and leads into the next book.

Review

In my opinion, this book was really good. It dealt with a lot of mature themes that quite frankly I enjoy reading about because they heighten the realism of the story. Each character was riddled with small problems and details that made the book that much better. Each was unique in his or her own way, yet they also remained very similar: something difficult for an author to achieve. I really enjoy action books though, and there was a lot of fighting throughout the book. If firefights and war-like stories aren't your thing then this book isn't for you. Some may also think that this book has some very disturbing undertones, and I agree with that, but in the end all of the elements used made a good book.
