My media coursework mainly sticks to the conventions of a typical rock music magazine, however in some cases I do believe it challenges those conventions.

My photo I used on the cover, however, challenges the norms for rock music magazines, in various examples of rock music magazines the cover photo has the artist looking angry or pulling an 'intimidating' face. But in my magazine, I have my model looking neutral and she is pictured from an even angle. This would challenge it as it shows the rock artist to be approachable and friendly instead of what's commonly assumed, which is that rock artists are intimidating.

Another reason how my media product conforms to the norms of music magazines is the slang and language style within it. I'd say that the language style within my magazine is chatty and makes the reader feel welcomed. Much like many magazines, the writing style has to sound friendly in order for the reader to relax whilst reading.

Firstly, my media product is designed in the same way. Likewise to real products, my magazine uses a similar vibrant colour scheme in order to be eye catching and grab the audiences attention. My colour scheme didn't conform to any gender stereotypes such as pink and purple/green and blue being associated with males/females. In some ways, sticking to a neutral colour scheme would challenge the conventions of music magazines in general, not just rock music ones, as commonly magazines stick to gender based colour schemes (e.g. TOtP). As well as this, my magazine sticks to the same style layout as a real product; there's a lot going on all over the page and generally it is quite crammed, giving it that 'busy' look with next to no white space. Real life media magazines do this often in order to make it look like their magazines are full of content and to even out the design without it looking unevenly distributed or bland.

To continue, my media product uses some of the same design features such as a large masthead, "pugs" and different fonts in order to make my magazine look more professional and realistic. It doesn't really challenge anything, it simply copies it, but without copying it the magazine wouldn't look realistic at all and would look bland, or unlike a magazine altogether.

Furthermore, the style of content within the magazine also makes this comparable to a real life product. It features content such as competitions and prizes, featured articles, lots of posters, and music news. This is essential in order to make it likewise to a magazine. It wouldn't work if you had a music magazine and it didn't contain music news, or giveaways relevant to the subject/topic or genre of music.

The people I used within my magazine challenges the norm for rock music magazines. In general, on real life examples, the artists chosen for cover use tend to be tattooed, pierced, or have brightly coloured hair. It's a stereotype that is widely 'known' among society that magazine companies use to their advantage. However, in my magazine, I deliberately chose to have only one model with brightly coloured hair, not all of them. This is more to create a variety, not to conform to that stereotype. Apart from this, my models all show a mix of hair types, colours, body types, height, and gender, and dress style. This is to appeal to as many people as possible and to add variety to my magazine.
