We learn intensely about food descriptions, restaurant etiquette and how to cook in Spanish IV. We review familiar and formal commands throughout the cooking unit as well as se pasiva. About a week before the competition I work with the foods teacher at our school in order to demonstrate how to make a tortilla for the students to watch first hand how it's done, I bring in the ingredients from home, as well as my own pan and vuelta tortilla. If you can't do this at
your school, you could always make one at home and make a video to show in class. Adobe Spark Video is a super easy way to make a video from scratch.

(look at that scrumdiddilyumptious tortilla española!)

I only speak Spanish in this class so I present the demonstration and they copy it down as I make it. In addition to making a tortilla for the competition, they have to turn in a good copy of the recipe in the tú, Uds. and se pasiva forms for a grade. Here is the google doc I use as a guide. I also send a parent letter home apologizing in advance for the mess they are about to make! lol

Tortilla española is quite possibly my favorite food. I don't even make them at home any more because I will literally eat the ENTIRE thing in one sitting. Instead, in order to get my yearly fill of tortilla española, I started a little competition in my Spanish IV class.

Qué es una tortilla española?
For those of you who have never been to or studied in Spain, the tortilla española (sometimes referred to as a tortilla de patatas) is a staple to the Spanish diet. Traditionally made with only 5 ingredients (eggs, potatoes, olive oil, onion, salt) the art of flipping the tortilla is a skill and the trickiest part of making a delicious beautiful tortilla. Turning the tortilla is no easy task and there are special plates made for this purpose called vuelta tortillas, but professionals know that a simple lid or plate will work every time.

The tortilla is so popular that there are even songs dedicated to it. One video in particular, is star studded, and has quite a catchy tune, Darle la vuelta a la tortilla. Its an idiomatic expression for turning your negative thoughts into positive ones. We read the Univision article on a website called Insert Learning, which allows you to upload any article form a website and insert questions, comments or start a discussion and upload the grades to google classroom. Its really quite handy. After watching the video, we work in pairs on the document below to find out about the famous Spanish personalities in the video. **BONUS**I also included my youtube playlist of other songs about tortillas and a how to video in Spanish.

Ultimately a week after the demonstration I invite other teachers and my supervisor and principal in to help judge the tortillas. I simply number them and cut them up for each judge to sample from.
