This can be applied in book 22 where one of the suitors offers there service and replacements of all of the damage they have caused in return for a truce. Odysseus immediately rejects and proceeds to kill every suitor who wasn't loyal. This displays Odysseus displaying toxic masculine power, because he probably thought if he were to peacefully forgive them, then he would look weak to his family and the town. Instead he mercifully murdered a 100 suitors and even waged war toward the end.

The article "What is toxic masculinity?" by Amy Morin says that "Toxic masculinity refers to the notion that some people’s idea of “manliness” perpetuates domination, homophobia, and aggression." In chapter 21, when the men decide to try using Odysseus' arrow in order to compete for his wife's hand, this is a clear example of toxic masculinity. When Odysseus insists on trying out the arrow himself, he is attempting prove that he is stronger and manlier than the other men in order to show his dominance. After, when he decides to kill them all, he is showing extreme aggression. Though in the time period of this book it seems less drastic to kill men for insulting or wronging you, and these men have surely wronged Odysseus, the events of these chapters definitely show toxic masculinity.

He truly does not know all that has happened in his absence and which townspeople have been loyal and true but he does not care. He must "prove" his manhood when he returns and even as individuals beg for their life or try to explain how they have been loyal, he ruthlessly demonstrates his masculinity by killing them one after the other. In doing so, Odysseus is "regaining control" that without it he would feel insecure and less masculine. He must prove his manhood to others, even if it means killing innocent people. The pictures in the graphic novel show him standing mercilessly over the bloody bodies without seemingly worrying about who might have been wrongly killed. Instead, it involves the extreme pressure some men may feel to act in a way that is actually harmful." In this passage, Amy Morin makes it clear that acting like a man isn't toxic masculinity. It is the outside pressures to act like a man that create toxic masculinity in men. Although Odysseus acts in a way that could be considered toxically masculine, he does so more from anger and a desire to reclaim his house. Athena intentionally keeps Odysseus angry so that he will kill all of the suitors. Additionally, it is clear that Odysseus is disgusted with the suitors and how they have disgraced his home. Odysseus is "regaining control" in doing so, that he will feel vulnerable and less masculine without it. Even if he has to kill innocent lives, he  has to assert to all his manhood. The images in the graphic novel show him looking at bloody victims mercilessly without really caring about who could be killed unlawfully. "Eurymachus, not even if each man gave me his entire fortune would I say my hand" (Book 22).  Suitors of Penelope surrender to Odysseus, after he kills their ringleader, yet Odysseus has no remorse, and irrationally murders every man quartering his home. From "What is Toxic Masculinity," the author expresses, "Drawing on more than 40 years of research, they suggest that traditional masculinity is psychologically harmful. They also report that socializing boys to suppress their emotions creates damage, both inwardly and outwardly" (Morin 14). It is sensible to imply that Odysseus was raised within the boundaries of traditional masculine values, due to his violent instincts and embarrassment he feels while shileding his emotions. These suitors were surely awful people, yet Odysseus believes that coincides with their death, unhealthily slaying each one after they tried to beg for a truce and to reverse all of their physical damage to his home. Odysseus expressed aggression when the other men challenged him for his masculinity and dominance. When others had doubt about his strength, he became angry and murdered the suitors. His actions of toxic masculinity were made because he thought the he needed to prove that he was worthy of his wife by being stronger than all the men.
