Jaden's point on how yes there was still racism and discrimination even after slavery ended but it was continued because they found a way to work through the 13th amendment to still have slavery through people in prison to be slaves
2. New Connection or realization
That the white upper class would use drugs to control the power and keep the blacks lower and give reason to imprison them so that they could use them a slave because they were inmates

what are some of the ways that the Black community has or could do so that there is not this huge gap of money power in society?

1. (Kenneth) KKK made way for new systems to further suppress Black people.

2. White people took advantage of Black position after slavery. If they could not read, they could not vote due to literary tests at voting booths (Favour) Government benefits off loans from Black people who do not have healthcare (Jaden)

- Modern day "1970-90's the war on drugs Reagan administration, **13th amendment documentary referred* -> pushed drugs onto black communities to keep them in prison"

- The wealth gap is continued because there is not the opportunity to build wealth. ex. They were not allowed to sustain themselves in Tulsa. -> wealth is and still is possible but denied.

Connection/ realization:
- The end of slavery did not mean right to "live". True living is to be allowed and accepted in the systems that sustain us. (Health care being provided, job opportunities, housing, etc.)
Question:
- Do you think it is possible to even close the wealth gap current day? If so, where do you think that change would start? With a new president or with a large community action, or both?

Even though slaves were freed, whites made them feel like they were still slaves. They faced new systems of oppression. Segregation, Jim Crow laws and vagrancy laws kept blacks at the bottom of the racial caste system. In modern day the places with drugs are the inner city because people with power, similar to what the south did, put all the problems to the black community. One question I had is how do we overcome the unfairness of wealth in america? White home owners built their wealth over generations. What is the first step we can take to make sure people of color can start to build wealth in America? One possible connection was redlining and violent crime in america.

Provoking Comment:
The loophole in the 13th Amendment allowed slavery to take on a new form despite it being abolished. This maintained a racial caste system.

Connection or Realization:
The government cancelled out the Black people's power to vote by taking advantage of the educational inequality and establishing literacy tests or polls.

The Reagan Administration used the same tactics White Southerners did by arbitrarily arresting Black people and using their physical labor for profit.

Questions:
How can we uplift the Black community and make the wealth gap smaller?

Oppression occurred as a way to keep the "White Man's" economy going

- The loopholes in the amendments allowed inequalities to continue to happen

Jacob: Racist whites would destroy any form of Black prosperity

Sunny-- negative perceptions and stereotypes created postwar era, would be used to justify use of force against Black communities.

Jennifer: Lack of funding by Freedmens bureau led to further vulnerability of Black communities. They were exposed to KKK attacks, lynchings, unfair laws, loopholes, etc.
