The FIT AAAAI committee do an exit survey regarding salary and compensation for newly graduated fellows

Would prioritize what I can gage from the interview. Are they transparent? I would speak to people who are new or at my level and learn what their experience has been.

Tenure track packages at NIH are pretty set. Lab space is pre-determined.

When going on an interview it is important to think about the nitty gritty, what is a day like, how much research support will you have. Don't be afraid to be very specific. Have a concrete understanding of what your day will be like.

Different places have different ways money is managed, some places have a general fund and some have a CAN.

Criteria I used to evaluate was location. Think about number of clinics, salary, what is most important. The number of clinics, what can be negotiated on? Clinic numbers is usually negotiable, relocation cost, sign-on bonus, etc.
List out pros and cons of each place and compare them. Is location is most important, is salary most important, etc.
Who will give you the best chance for getting the career you want. Decide what you want and once you have your pro and con list, go back to the place that is at the top and negotiate what you want.
It's important to have a list of what you want outside of salary. What is policy on professional license fees and society fees. Vacation time, etc. It is important to see policies in writing, because you are your only advocate and sometimes people are misinformed.

Mistakes - I have seen people attracted by rapid promotion or identity they want and that can detract from what they really want to do.

If you decide to go to a particular place because your friend is there or you like the boss and then that person might move.

Have seen people take a position and it isn't what they want, but by the time they figure that out, they are invested in the community.

Ask about loan repayment. Ask about the program for it.

Asking questions is key.

Protected time - you need more when you start out than you think you do. I should have asked for more protected time. Ask for more protected time than you think you need. Talk about your interests and what you want to do with that time. Protected time will make or break your quality of life.

Amount of admin support and amount of red tape that goes along with that is important to identify. Ask for someone who can sit down with you and go through the specific process. You are doing the important work of the research, but there should be people who can support you with the administrative processes.

Recent interview experience. It is important to not assume anything about an institution. Knowing how many news and how many returns to expect in a day. Talk about RVU's
Asking about what is involved with promotion? Is it a very clear stream lined process.
