This article introduces 4 types of formative assessments in the science classroom: 1. Class Checks- teachers read individual student work (exit slip; notebook entry) and gauge the class's level of understanding. The teacher then uses that information to plan or modify instruction. 2. Small Group Checks- assess students' understanding and promote deeper discussion among students when they are working in small groups. 3. Self and Peer Checks - students assess their own work as well as the work of their peers 4.

The chapter from this book mentions summative assessments.
