He came from a single parent household, struggled academically and behaviorally, and normally would be my "type" of student that I would work hard build a relationship with. I never gave up but it was a definitely a challenge. At the end of his 7th grade year, he told me to stop trying and I said I wouldn't just give in. He ended up getting caught egging my house that weekend. It was as if he was trying to push me away. I truly tried to give him a clean slate but my effort just wasn't what he wanted. I needed more help beyond my own experience. I had him again as an 8th grader which made it very difficult for him to bond to my classroom or the school considering our history from the previous year. The strategy that ended up working to get him through the daily classes was to ignore him completely. Who after school one day sat down with me and we discussed race. She asked why everyone described her as black? I asked did it bother her and she said yes, she wanted to be called African American. We discussed we didnt like using colors to discuss one another since she didnt feel black described her and white did not describe me. We bonded over that but I feel I never had the opportunity or the autonomy to address it in class without punishment.
