Realistic

Overbearing

"You can't be both. You must be either one or the other." (Santosh 72)

Pi's father is all about living modern. He looks at life through his wallet not through god like Pi. His reasonable outlook on life makes him very strong in his beliefs but also makes him a very narrowminded, and willful dad.

The Will to Survive

"I fished with a variety of hooks at a variety of depths for a variety fish... The hours were long, the fish were small, and richard parker was forever hungry." (Pi 194)

"The first training session was over. It was a resounding success. I stopped whistling and sat down heavily on the raft, out of breath and exhausted. And so it came to be: Plan number 7: Keep him alive." (Pi 166)

Throughout this whole book I see Pi's will to pursue his goals. This mind set really starts to bleed through when Pi is living in the lifeboat with richard parker. To survive a week in a lifeboat is a feat, now add the fact that you are a small vegetarian living 26 feet away from a bengal tiger and you have a best selling novel on your hands. I find Pi's will exhilerating and abundant.

"My majors were Religious Studies and Zoology." (Pi 3)

"Mr.Kumar said, 'Equus burchelli boehmi.' Mr.Kumar said, 'Allahu akbar.' I said, 'It's very pretty.' We looked on."-Mr.Kumar, Mr.Kumar, (Pi 84)

The whole book is written around Religion and science. Pi's two biggest interests are Zoology and Religious Studies; two things that normally do not mix, yet Pi manages to live a healthy life wih his family. Both of these quotes show the harmony that can exist between the two subjects.
