Dedicate some time to let them engage with you and the topics your novel addresses. 

There are several possibilities of doing this:

  • Tasks in small groups (breakout sessions).
  • Quiz them on what they have memorized (content-oriented task).
  • Let them be creative (turning the novel into film - which cast / collecting associations your performance has raised in the audience - parallels to other works of art).

Create your libretto for two reasons:
  1. It must enable the audience to follow you.
  2. It will be useful to anyone who wants to learn more about your novel (future reference).

  • Make sure the audience can follow!
  • Stick to the rules of conduct (check below)!
  • Make sure that all members of the book club do a fair share of talking! (This may be easier to achieve if you define experts on certain aspects that you are going to address.)

    You can add other aspects or focus on some more than others, depending on what you decide ist most interesting to describe the uniqueness of your novel. Mandatory: author vs narrator / setting / plot / one example of characterisation.

    It means that you need to take into account that you have an audience.

    What is the consequence?
    You need to make it interesting for them.
    You may want to light a spark of interest for your book and attract more readers.
    You want them to understand what you are talking about, without spoiling the possible future read for them.
