Introduction/Summary by Deanna Tomblin

“Where Are You Going, Where have you been” by Joyce Carol Oates,” a short story about a strange abduction in a small town. Connie was fifteen years of age. She was conscious of her looks and lived in her own world. She lived with her mother and her sister, June. Connie was two-sided, because she acted one way at home, and another way in public. She was more outgoing and liked to get into trouble while pretending to go out with her sister’s group of friends. Connie was vain and annoyed at her family. June was more domestic than Connie, and Connie’s mom gave her constant grief over not being more like her sister. Connie was drawn to, and heavily influenced by music. She went out with June, and left with a boy to a restaurant and alley. While she was heading back with her date that night, she locked eyes with a mysterious, charming stranger. The strange man wore sunglasses, wagged his finger at her and said “Gonna get you baby.”

One Sunday afternoon, Connie’s family goes away to a family barbeque. She had a weird sudden urge to wash her hair that day. Sitting on her porch in the sun, Connie’s hair dries. She then hears the gravel of the driveway. A glimmering gold car, with weird cryptic writing on the side pulls up in her driveway. It’s the same man she exchanged glances with after her night on the town. He introduced himself as Arnold Friend. Arnold repeatedly asked her to get in the car. There was an exchange of conversation between them, and Arnold slipped out of the car. He told his friend with the boombox to move to the back.

Arnold revealed that he learned Connie’s name and other various information. He could also see what her family was doing in real time. Arnold kept urging her to go with him. His language became more violent and sexually explicit. In a last attempt to call the police, Connie ran into the back room with the telephone, but only could pick it up before she hears a sort of wailing and feels a stabbing in her lungs. Arnold made Connie put the phone down. They went outside, and Connie got in Arnold’s car, and they drove off to the land of no return. Connie knew she would never see her family, or anything ever again. Arnold Friend turned out to be an old fiend.

The wolf sees his prey downstream. He distracts the lamb by asking it random questions, and then eats it. The story shows the innocence of the lamb and the predatory skills of the wolf.

Analysis of Three Little Pigs:

http://shortstoriesshort.com/story/the-three-little-pigs/

The story “The Three Little Pigs” contains several themes. The balance between good and evil theme can be seen in the story, as well as survival. The three little pigs were innocent pigs, having varying degrees of house safety. The big bad wolf tries to blow it all down. In the end, the brick house stood the strongest. The pigs without much defense got their houses blown down.
