This quote shows that Jeannette has perseverance because even though she is in a difficult situation she still tries to turn it into something good. They had just moved to Welch after moving around a lot and  Jeannette says she wants to make the best of the time she has there.  A lot of bad things happen in Welch but some good things also happen and in the end she ends up persevering and moving to New York.

"Hitler loved dogs," Mom said without hesitation."  Even though many things happen throughout the family they still try and find forgiveness in each other.  Jeannette owns a large amount of land and after how her mother had treated her throughout the book, she still let her live with her. Jeannette still loved her dad even after she was being used by her dad to make money and her dad stole a good amount of money from her.
