Creationism was the belief that God created the universe. The Scopes trial was a criminal trial held in Dayton Ohio in 1925 that tested the constitutionality of a Tennessee law that banned the teachings of Darwin's theory of evolution in schools. The argument became less about the legal matter but more of an argument of social division against the generation gap.

By Danny, Ruby, Marissa, and Karlie

In February of 1929, men disguised as officers approached a rival Chicago gang and ordered them to obey their rules. After they thought nothing of it, the two sides attacked each other. This is known today as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. The result was several deaths in the gang dressed up as officers.

The Traditionalist view, also known as the "Dry" perspective, believed that alcoholism caused many negative things such as crime, violence, and the breakup of families.

The Modernist View, also known as the "Wet" perspective, believed that it was not sinful to drink, and backed this up by saying Jesus turned water into wine.

The most important outcome of this debate was the establishment of the Volstead Act, which supported the 18th Amendment prohibiting the making and selling of alcohol.

From this, groups emerged from this such as the "speakeasies". This was a secret club that emerged after the establishment of the 18th Amendment. A specific criminal that was involved in this group was Al Capone. He was known to execute bootlegging- the production, transporting, and selling of illegal alcohol, which lead to a multi-billion dollar business by the 1920s.

Luke Harvey, Jacob Jedry, Zachary Leachman, and Zachary Pendarvis

The traditionalists are more conservative, and the modernists are more apt to change. Modernists typically are more open in embracing new ideas, styles, and social trends. A traditionalist however, is one who has a deep respect for the old ways and religious values, they are the anchors that provide order and stability in a society. These two groups are deeply divided, and both sides look at one another as monsters.

The traditionalists believes that new ideas should be viewed suspiciously, and they believe that they are defending the good in America. The Modernists however believe that cities provide freedom to live, and that rural America is behind in modern day beliefs. Some examples of what traditionalist may belief is that courtships should lead to marriage, and that young people are often reckless. The modernist is more likely to go to higher education, and believe that dating doesn't necessarily have to lead to marriage. Modernists also tend to not be as focused on religion.
