Sarah Grimke was born on November 26, 1792, in Charleston, South Carolina. She lived in a plantation in the South and quickly developed anti slavery opinions because of injustices against slaves they saw around them at a young age. At age 5, she witnessed a slave being whipped and tried to run away to a place where there was no slavery. Sarah had a younger sister named Angelina with whom she shared abolitionist beliefs. In 1821 she moved to Philadelphia and joined the abolitionist movement in 1836, a year after her sister Angelina did so.
