During my first year of teaching when I would informally assess my students, I would have them raise their hands to answer. I would also use the thumbs up or thumbs down method for them to show their answers. I realized that some students would look at others to get their answers and I wasn't actually assessing the entire class effectively.

I hired whiteboards, Kahoot, and Plickers to informally assess my students. Each of these allows the students to select their answer without being influenced by others. This makes my assessments more meaningful and I can hold the students accountable for their own answers.

My students are requiring me to develop lesson plans and assessments that are fully engaging. When I use other forms of technology to assess my students (other than the typical raise your hand to answer) they are more engaged and excited about the lesson.
