During my first year of teaching when I would informally assess my students, I would have them raise their hands to answer. I would also use the thumbs up or thumbs down method for them to show their answers. I realized that some students would look at others to get their answers and I wasn't actually assessing the entire class effectively.

Each of these allows the students to select their answer without being influenced by others.
